I don’t think Mastodon is any more difficult to understand or use than Twitter, Facebook, etc.

It just happens to be home to people that are more technically minded, on average. And because of that, we tend to front-load a bunch of information about the intricacies of ActivityPub that most people really don’t ever need to know at all.
