And I'm learning by following you lot. It is pretty different--definitely requires a different 'mental model'.

@georgetakei Great to see you on Mastodon! Keep up the great posts; been a fan of yours since I was a wee little one.
@jbf1755 Maybe a sabbatical at one of the universities here or a visiting professorship? There have to be some perks to being an academic lol. My bro-in-law and my wife are both professors and try to have sabbaticals in places that are interesting and new, as long as there is a way to do academic collabs etc. University of Melbourne comes to mind but there are plenty around that must overlap with some of your academic interests. Probably something you already explored!
@jbf1755 definition come visit Australia and New Zealand. Both amazing places. I moved from Toronto in 1997 to Melbourne. Great place to live. So much to see in Australia--wait until the weather gets a bit better, we're having a lot of rain and flooding at the moment.

Mastodon FAQ: Toot sweet?

https://mjcarty.com/mastodon-faq-toot-sweet

My latest blog post is an attempt to answer some frequently asked questions for new Mastodon users or the Mastodon-curious.

Along the way, it takes in some wise words from the following excellent folk: @davidallengreen; @clive; @teago_emplaw; and @Kategl.

Also featuring some art from the wonderful Winsor McCay, who (I was delighted to discover) was very fond of drawing the mastodon!

Mastodon FAQ: Toot sweet?

Mastodon: the next big thing in social media? Here, I attempt to answer some frequently asked questions for new Mastodon users or the Mastodon-curious.

@DrLindseyFitzharris thanks for posting this.
@CountBinface As an Australian, I approved of the use of this term.
@gwildar @davidallengreen Agreed, and I have yearned for this. In my local community, us admins on the community page rule with an iron fist (all posts are moderated) to force some cognitive effort on the part of posters. Let's see what happens here. I suspect it will be a mixed bag, like anything, but perhaps we have more tools to help us remain civil with each other.

@PeteStrzok

Pete, let's hope it stays that way on Mastodon (and this applies to all of us). I do wonder if there is something in the hyperreal nature of these rapid comms technologies that bypass critical and reflective though simply due to more cognitive effort being required.

@gwildar @davidallengreen 100% It reminds me of the hope people had in the early days of the Internet.
