"We need to make radical changes in the legislature, in the institutions and in private lives to make Finland welcoming so migrants can feel at home.

Yesterday we presented an initiative along those lines [Initiative 30, Full Voting Rights for Permanent Residents], today I implore you to go out there and take a radical step of giving a warm welcoming smile when you see a migrant working hard to make Finland their home."

"Finland is a great country to live in, but also, it is a country where the democratically elected prime minister went on the podium and claimed to make it difficult for migrants, including ones already living in the country and faced no consequences.

It is a country where the children of coloured people are not safe in broad day light in a busy shopping mall.

It is a country that prides itself in not giving a smile to 'strangers'."

Usman Rasheed is an alternate board member of Green Sisu and was one of our delegates to the just-finished Party Congress.

Due to a scheduling issue, he was unable to speak at the Party Congress, so we are sharing his planned speech here (with permission).

Extraordinary General Meeting 2025 | Green Sisu

Green Sisu board member Muhammad Usman Rasheed wrote a compelling piece in Verde about the case of Fayez Bassalat, a Palestinian immigrant to Finland recently denied a residence permit renewal: https://www.verdelehti.fi/2025/09/04/green-sisus-take-on-fayez-case/.

Green Sisu's take on Fayez’ case

Finland needs immigration of skilled labor but the harsh interpretation of laws by Migri works against this narrative. Fayez Basalat is not the first skilled migrant given the deportation notice, nor will they be the last, unless Migri aligns its priorities with those of the state.
