For example, with process substitution, you can do it in one step without creating temporary files. In this example compare two dirs using the diff;
diff <(ls /app1) <(ls /oldapp1)

The above diff command thinks it's receiving two filenames, but it's actually receiving the live output streams from the two ls commands. Thus, you can do powerful comparisons and manipulations directly on the CLI. Give it a try.
