#TrueNAS 25.10.3 has been released!
https://forums.truenas.com/t/truenas-25-10-3-is-now-available/65226

The TrueNAS team is pleased to release TrueNAS 25.10.3! Notable changes: Fixes read authentication errors caused by block cloning between encrypted ZVOLs with different encryption keys (NAS-140263). Block cloning between encrypted ZVOLs that did not share compatible encryption keys was allowed, but subsequent reads of the cloned data produced authentication failures. TrueNAS now verifies that encryption keys match before allowing a block clone operation to proceed. Fixes Active Directory user...
#HexOS gave me the 1.0 update this morning and it feels like I am opening Christmas presents! Yep I am a nerd!
This week's Linux and FOSS news:
LINUX NEWS
Manjaro lead dev plans to implement age verification, other team members don't:
https://forum.manjaro.org/t/will-manjaro-implement-age-verification/186816
(Aragorn for Manjaro lead! lol)
Solus says they don't have plans to implement anything, but aren't sure if the laws affect them, they are monitoring the situation:
https://getsol.us/2026/04/solus-and-age-verification/
Vipnix (a Gentoo > Funtoo > Macaroni-based, Systemd-free distro) rejects implementing age verification, excludes Brazil (their own country!) and California:
https://vipnix.com.br/site/livecd-vipnix/
https://github.com/BryanLunduke/DoesItAgeVerify/pull/73
(They are pretty brave that despite being a Brazilian company, they decided not to comply, respect to them. Idk if I would personally trust them though, because they include some Google and Cloudflare stuff in their website, but their stance is respectable regardless)
Mobian will do whatever upstream Debian does:

I made an age attestation/verification tracker to track which FOSS OSes (Linux, BSD, others) comply with the laws, which oppose:

Well, I just got my first "auction server" bill from @hetzner for my "Auction Server" I'm using as a #truenas #zfs backup destination.
My hopes that the "hourly cost" would mean the bill would come in below the advertised maximum did not work out. The bill is for $32.
I'm NOT complaining about Hetzner's rates here, but close to $400/year to run a rmeote server that's basically acting as a host for a pair og 4TB disks is a LOT of money for a homelabber working in academia like me.
So I may need to give up on the magic of ZFS replication and cave to using something like S3 with Glacier cold storage (I'll look into other cheaper vendors for this - I have no problem with paying my former employer but if I can save money I'm gonna do it :)
Unlike the zfs replica it's not as guaranteed but given that my off site backups are really a DR thing, I'm honestly not sure how much that should matter to me.
I thought about the zfs.rent situation - but with HDD prices SO insane right now, my wife would be VERY rightt to balk at my wanting to spend another $700 on top of the close to $3K I spent for NAS and drives.
le sigh :) The best laid plans of mice and men.
Update: My thought that S3 storage might be cheaper was WAY out of line.
Backblaze B2, which I used to use to back up my Synology #NAS, is $6 per TB per month.
So it would be $24 to back up what I have now, and if I ever store more in my NAS (which has 40TB usable) it'll become cost p;rohibitive REALLY quick.
The backup thingie the Synology had, Hyperbackup, used to do a crazy amount of compression on the data.
Not sure what I'm gonna do about this.
I should probably submit a ticket t o @hetzner support to see how much adding extra disk would cost.
💾 The #TrueNAS team announced the initial beta for TrueNAS 26 yesterday, following TrueNAS 25.10 this past October. It's a major release for the Ubuntu-based distro intended as an operating system for NAS devices.

TrueNAS 26 beta arrives with OpenZFS 2.4 and Linux kernel 6.18

TIL: #TrueNAS, the NAS OS for networked storage, doesn't store the pictures for apps locally (did I mention this is an OS for storage). So the ~32x32 pixel image for Localai is created by downloading a 1024x1024 800KB image every time you access your app management page, unless the client has cached it.
This seems bad and inefficient, not to mention the [hopefully benign] metrics this could be used to collect.
