Professor of Mechanical Engineering, & Associate Dean, at UC Santa Barbara. I like airplanes, old cameras, and cycling around town.

There's a wifi network in my neighborhood:

Made a split-second detour on my 🚲 commute to catch the sunset. Glad I did. Ended up spotting a trio of folks who were enjoying it just as much as I was. #BikeCommute #sunset

We need all of the dashcams we can get in Minnesota ASAFP for ICE observers.

You can send us cash with a few taps via this link and we’ll order them wholesale and get them deployed to Minneapolis, the suburbs, and beyond: https://ottergoose.net/dashcam/

Dash cams for Minnesota

A crowd-sourcing effort to collect and distribute dash cams in Minnesota to help ICE observers stay safe.

The clouds made things interesting tonight. 🚀 #Spacex #Falcon9 #Starlink
Back to my original purpose for being out at this location. #UnitedAirlines #AirbusA320 #retrojet #N475UA
Here's a closeup of one of them. #deer #wildlifephotography #goleta
There’s a field I bike to for planespotting, about a mile north of SBA’s final approach. Planes transiting the tight gaps in the trees make for great shots when the light cooperates. A few weekends ago, I was waiting with a 500mm (700mm w/ converter) when a herd of deer wandered in. The lens was too tele. iPhone to the rescue. #planespotting #avgeek #wildlifephotography #deertuesday
Here's this evening's NROL-105 launch as seen from Santa Barbara. 5 1/2 minute exposure. #spacex #NROL105
Not a very interesting photo of Crew-11 re-entry as seen from my driveway (120-second exposure). Just a streak across the sky, which somehow still felt worth setting my alarm and stepping outside for. #Crew11 #Reentry #NightSky
A wee-hour suburban scene on California’s Central Coast.
7m11s exposure starting at 5:44am: Falcon 9 trajectory for the NASA Pandora/Twilight mission, placing a space telescope into orbit to study exoplanet atmospheres — including booster separation and re-entry burn toward Vandenberg. Curvy aircraft trails are a Delta E175 to SLC and a Southwest 737 to LAS. Bonus: streetlights reveal my lens has 10 aperture blades. Mystery streak upper right remains unsolved. #Astrophotography #Exoplanets
