👋 I wrote a thing!

I started replacing some of the standard UNIX commands I use with modern alternatives.

Here's how I do it:

I've recently been replacing more and more of the standard UNIX commands that ship with most distros (and macOS) with more modern alternatives. I'm going to show what I mean by "replacing" and how I do it.

I wrote about useful macOS utilities. Check it out if you're looking for ways to improve your workflow on Mac :)

Whenever I explain my #research at Google into mobile text editing, I'm usually met with blank stares or a slightly hostile "Everyone can edit text on their phones, right? What's the problem?"

Text editing on mobile isn't ok. It's actually much worse than you think, an invisible problem no one appreciates. I wrote this post so you can understand why it's so important.

I’d like to test my hunch that there is one date format (ISO 8601) that works well for everybody, globally—vs. other formats where you can never be completely sure what’s the month and what’s the date.

Boosts appreciated – so that a wide variety of people shows up in the votes.

Given this date: 2023-03-11

What would your assumption be?

03 is the month

I don’t trust Twitter, Meta and Bluesky (*) with social media, so Mastodon is an easy choice for me and I have no FOMO. However, I miss some Twitter-only people.

I enjoy that I don’t see ads (I’m paying for that via donations but it’s more than worth it to me). And there are now enough people here so that discussions and posts are meaningful.

(*) I’m least skeptical about Bluesky but wonder what their business model will be—given that they are venture-funded: https://www.axios.com/2023/07/06/bluesky-dorsey-twitter-rival-funding

At best, they're a relic from the past, and at worst, they're actively misleading.

I recently wrote about what I think is a sensible front-end stack for large production applications.
