Allow me to introduce #MLL coding, the counterpart to #LLM vibe coding. MLL (Manual Labor of Love) coding allows one to spend more time doing a thing, and lets one get better, faster, and 100% understood code.
@fn0rd I was interviewing for Hubspot recently, and spent about 30 mins chatting with the recruiter before she said "ok so there's a code test, then systems design test, then another code test, then of course the AI fluency test, then a hiring manager call..."
I satd "sorry, what's an AI fluency test?"
"Oh, well just a standard test because you need to use AI for everyday coding"
"Aha... do you mean, it's available as a tool for engineers when they see fit, or like they MUST use it X number of times per day?"
"Yes."
"...?"

We haven't seen the first great AI collapse. We haven't seen a foundation model company make the BlackBerry mistake or the Nokia mistake, or the Roman mistake, or the Ottoman mistake or reach their Bunker-in-Berlin mistake. But we will, and we'll see it multiple times, because these mistakes = features of power concentration.

The empire always falls

A citizen of Rome in 117 AD, under Emperor Trajan, would've found it difficult to imagine the empire not existing. The roads, the aqueducts, the legal system, the trade networks stretching from Britain to Mesopotamia: all of it seemed to be a near-fact of nature, like gravity // the Mediterranean itself.

@Daojoan please, please let this happen soon. Every time I read yet another Twitter or LinkedIn post about how I'm going to be left behind, my brain shrinks by 4%.
@Philsan Those are beautiful gfx and colour choices!
This is something that probably sounds obvious to some folks and unhinged to others, but I think it’s worth saying anyway: “workers who don’t adopt AI will get left behind” is right-wing propaganda. It’s more than just a surface-level advertising message. It makes the unstated assumption that workers are all in a state of conflict, racing against one another in competition for acceptable employment. This is the literal opposite of class consciousness! All workers should be aiming for a world where we don’t have to fight each other to earn a chance at a decent life.

@pesco yes!!! I always found that distinction of programmer vs "software developer" or even "software engineer" to be a fictional, self-serving snobbish narrative. I like "programmer" or even "coder" and to me, they always connotated "someone who writes programs that solve problems". Of course this includes thinking about the problem and system design.
@macinjosh then you switch back to one of the setup steps which has tmed out waiting for some kind of brower SSO thing and have to restart that, then it's 6pm...
@c64whiz That Sneakers clip is so disturbingly prescient...
