Don't use real brands in your games/novels

Not because you can't, but because you often can in novels at least— but shouldn't, because you're giving mega corps free advertising.

I mean there's other good reasons too, like "inventing dumb fake brands is half the fun", but that's plenty reason already. Don't lick boots, even if they taste like Oreo.

@aras sorry to bother you, but my local and federated timelines are just empty for some weeks now, in every client that I try to use... something happened to them? or it's a problem in my side here?

i started playing smash ultimate (yes i'm late to the party) and World of Light is really more fun that people talked at the time

it's seems like the team used all the content of the game as a lego box and started to imagine new scenarios to the spirits, and the "collect them all" aspect is really fun

(more fun that the subspace emissary that I didn't even finish because of how generic the levels were)

Ok, so the world has an animal that poops in cubes and I just realize that this month? Thanks to **Hardhat Wombat**, the new puzzle game from the creator of Plants vs. Zombies. It's a really simple (but effective) puzzle-platformer, with some execution problems with artificial limits that can cause frustration. If you like that type of game, maybe it's worth to take a look.

Hardhat Wombat vai do lixo (orgânico) ao luxo (urbano) | Crítica

Do criador de Plants vs. Zombies, Hardhat Wombat é um puzzle-platformer bem interessante sobre construção civil com cocô de mamíferos.

A $15 microtransaction horse on WoW made more money than StarCraft 2. No wonder companies are betting so much on micro transactions. People complain but apparently it takes tons of money

@djlink

There are so many things wrong with this but how the hell is $15 micro? What's next? Pay a measly one time microtransaction of just $60 to get a game?

@tacitus @djlink Our jargon is so dumb because the terminology doesn't evolve. Instead, the meaning encompasses more.

Games with little character but lots of stats and leveling may be "role-playing games". "First person experience" failed to catch on, so instead games are unironically called "walking simulators" but an actual simulator like qwop doesn't fit in that category. Roguelikes are often not something you'd describe as "like Rogue".

At least we managed to move away from "doom clones"!

@djlink I have so many feelings about this 😳

@djlink Gambling also makes a lot of money and people seem to like it despite knowing better.
I still wouldn't really want to work in the gambling industry.

On the other hand you also have to craft a world first, people love so much, they buy a 15$ microtransaction thing to make few million bucks. May not be the immediate cause but there is a corellation.
I think the ballance makes or breaks it. Push all your might just into that direction and see what happens on Steam with new Blizzard games.

@djlink not really a justification for how askew things have gotten overall, though. 😕

I also always shudder when as good as anyone working for any 'AAA' title states overtime as standard nowadays.

@djlink maybe this is why I haven’t heard anything about StarCraft 3

@andykorth @djlink the main issue is that all the key people who worked on SC2 have left to go work on Stormgate instead.

there are rumours that SC3 is in early dev, though.

@djlink In the same way, working in a terrible city finance job that just moves numbers around spreadsheets and makes absolutely no contribution to the world makes more money than e.g. being a nurse.

The problem is not that the choice is obvious and one that anyone would make, it’s that the folks in charge have boiled everything down to simply money. CEOs might as well be replaced by calculators at this point, that’s the limit of their imagination

@sinbad @djlink efficiently assigning resources is contributing good to the world assuming you are doing it for not just money. Every non profit needs some level of management

@djlink StarCraft 2 seems niche compared to the massive market of World of Warcraft, so at first I wasn't so surprised. But wikipedia says WoW has only doubled SC2:WoL's unit sales?!

Dates for the sales numbers are 6 years apart and both are free to play, but still not the order of magnitude I expected.
