A semi-regular shout-out from me about the brilliant Standard Ebooks (@standardebooks) the "volunteer-driven project that produces new editions of public domain ebooks that are lovingly formatted, open source, free of U.S. copyright restrictions, and free of cost."

Their books really are a joy to read.

I've finally switched to the @Vivaldi browser. I've been using Firefox for as long as I've been on the internet, but the focus on AI means it's no longer the browser for me. Thankfully unlike Chrome, Vivaldi supports the uBlock Origin extension which is the most important extension for being able to browse the web nowadays.

Many people have forgotten Tim Berners-Lee's article "Cool URIs don't change", which emphasizes that links should be designed to be persistent. It suggests avoiding elements that are prone to change in links to ensure their long-term validity.

The IETF HTTP WG mailing list has been hosted by the W3C since late 1997, because of practical considerations and the close collaboration between the IETF and W3C on HTTP standards.

Prior to this, the HTTP WG’s mailing list was hosted by Hewlett-Packard Labs. This was the primary venue for discussions during the development of HTTP/1.0 (published as RFC 1945 in 1996) and early work on HTTP/1.1.

I feel this needs to be repeated 🍪

The annoyance of cookie banners
doesn't come from the regulations, but from the malicious compliance of the corporations who want to exploit your personal data.

No data-harvesting cookies = No banner.
Simple.

My websites have no cookie banners,
because they don't use any non-essential cookies and don't track visitors.

Yours shouldn't either.

Germany about-faces on privacy and is going to support Chat Control https://signal.org/blog/pdfs/germany-chat-control.pdf

> We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe.

If you have a YouTube channel, I am begging you to turn off the auto-dubbing option for your vids once & for all from your settings.

Your viewers don't have the option to turn it off for all videos they see. They have to do it for every damn auto-dubbed video every time it plays.

AI voice annoyance aside, translations are bad (if even I can tell they're bad for languages I half-understand, they're BAD) when they even are at all. At times it chokes and there's just... silence! While lips move.

Web Extensions let users customize their browsers by altering their behaviors and page content through small applications developed by third party #developers. This proposed new @w3c Web Extensions #WorkingGroup aims to standardize a common core of cross-browser extension #APIs that has emerged from recent progress in #interoperability, making cross-browser extension development easier.

Updated my personal server from @debian 12 #bookworm to 13 #trixie, and as I expected, that went completely smoothly and without any complication. Debian always delivers.
