My #feditips for new/returning people:

1. Follow fast. Follow people here even if you didn't on Twitter. Glance thru the local timeline and follow anyone you see post anything funny or interesting. You need stuff in your feed.

2. Unfollow just as fast if you're not vibing.

3. When a friend joins, turn on post notifications. It's the 🔔 on their profile.

4. This site is slower paced. Snarky hot takes aren't rewarded as much.

5. Toot! is a good iOS app. People seem to like Tusky for Android.

For those of you who are thinking about diversity, inclusion and representativity in dataviz and what you can do, I wrote a blog post of my experience using an inclusion rider as a speaker at a data-related conference. https://www.chezvoila.com/blog/inclusionrider
What happened when I used an inclusion rider at a data conference

This is the blog post that I wish I would have found when I got invited to speak at a data conference and decided to send them an inclusion rider for women and minorities. I hope this is how you found it. (Also, obviously, I’m virtue signalling and if that bothers you, you can stop reading here.)

I propose to use the golden ratio when deciding where the scale of a line chart should start (when not zero).

A golden ratio for line charts with truncated y-axis

While we hold that bar charts should start at zero, there is no such expectation for line charts . But you’ll always find someone on social media to denounce a “dishonest” line chart that enhances the variations by truncating the y-axis. There is usually ample pushback, but it often leads to the qu

The latest IPCC report has made me even more impatient with bad charts about climate change. I wish people who communicate data on this topic would take it as seriously as the econometric models. It’s not that hard. https://www.chezvoila.com/blog/redesign-carbon
Redesigning an important graph about a carbon tax

Data visualisation is a language for humans. Computers and machines are fine with raw data. On the other hand, humans are often interested in data simply because it is visualized. Many will understand the underlying phenomenon — a trend, an outlier, a missed target — when they see it in a graph. H

I sat with the Minard Map, a magnifying glass, a notebook and a beer and wrote about things hiding in plain in this iconic work. Can this overused map still surprise you?

I wrote these "13 facts you didn't know" four years ago, but it got a bit of a revival online lately. There's a quick survey at the end and I'll compile the answers soon.

13 facts you didn't know about the Minard map

The map  representing the Russian campaign of the French army in 1812 is a true celebrity of the data visualization world, mostly known for its spectacular features. Lines show the number, location and direction of the army troops. The temperature during the return from Moscow i
