I need #mastodonhelp

I’m trying to get the column layout to work. When I go into my acct preferences I can do it, and the layout looks like the first screenshot below. All good.

But when I try to get back to the app by clicking cancel in the top left, that right hand column disappears. Is that how it’s meant to work?
