Meet Olaudah Equiano (c. 1745–1797), who was sold into slavery at 11, eventually bought himself free, wrote a bestselling book about his life, became a celebrated British abolitionist, and joined the Phipps expedition in 1773 - the first Black man to sail the Arctic (although they didn't reach the North Pole).
