Aerospace engineer, maker and terrible amateur programmer. I will probably toot when I've made something, mainly 3d printing and plotting; if you want to make what I've made you'll probably find it on Printables: https://www.printables.com/social/152251-pittance/models

I am also on Pixelfed: https://pixey.org/fastness

Today we got our dishwasher fixed under warranty. To diagnose it, the tech stuck a photosensor+magnet onto the front panel over the green status LED and started reading diagnostics. It turns out the status LED is actually a serial port*, and it's continually transmitting status.

I can think of so many gadgets that could and should use this trick...

*It's probably something other than regular serial -- a UART's TX would flicker. I don't know any details.

@Extelec We've a bunch of people with PhDs at work. One who relatively recently got theirs said that they were told by their advisor that if they were in doubt about something there were a couple of phrases that would nearly always work as a response to a question:
"There's a lot of debate around the definition of those terms in the literature"
"It seems that things may be a little more complicated and interesting than that but it's still being studied"
Leafy scarf done!
I decided to dye it black since I ended up #knitting it in different colored yarns and was not happy with the way it was...

@pauldoo my HTC Desire has the same thing and I still use it to this day as an eReader because it's small and the LED screen can go very, very dark so I can read at night without disturbing people. The track pad thing makes it easy to turn pages in some orientations

(It's disconnected from the mobile network and WiFi of course, I'm not sure it's ready for the 2025 internet even if it could still make the connection which it probably can't)

@barnoid our tree did that a couple of years ago, we had so much jam we didn't know what to do with it. Even though we have only a few fruits we had fewer worms than I was expecting this time, we always have a few to evict though

Heck yeah plum jam!

The tree (mainly used for shade) hasn't been as productive this year as in the past but it's still more plums than we can eat so: jam it is

The cutest PCB ever 😀

Stonehenge at scale 1000:1 (or so). With blinking LEDs!!
Designed by @cccpresser and others, soldered and programmed by @casartar .

@jonty @jarkman @solderandchaos @JuliaRez @Foxboron @kgz what 3 words alternative where instead of unreliable word combinations you have to beatbox to the emergency operator

@rasterweb we visited Portmeirion on holiday a few years back, it's an odd place but really interesting

The place we were staying was relatively nearby so they had a DVD with the series that we showed to the kids so they'd have context for some of what they were about to see. Their reaction could be summarised as "what the heck did I just watch?"

@rasterweb UK: NHS is not all in a great place at the moment but most everyone I know who has needed care has got it. For another wider example: I also have private healthcare from my employer that they provide as a free (£0) benefit. Last time I needed an MRI (knee) I used this for speed/convenience and it cost around £800 for everything (scan, radiographer for interpretation, consultant) and I paid zero of that, didn't even see the bill until it was attached to some notes they sent for info
