Might take some tinkering, but I think Mastodon is fairly simple to install as a standalone instance.

“Spider Kiss” (Harlan Ellison), “Alien III” (William Gibson), and “Becoming Superman,” (J. Michael Straczynski’s autobiography), all wonderful.
Non-Fiction, “Space Odyssey” (Benson) and “The Dawn of Everything” are also excellent.
Twitter folks, there is a way to make Mastodon feel like home more UI wise: #MastodonBirdUI, an interface that resembles the Twitter UI.
Many instances support Mastodon Bird UI (like mstdn.social under the theme "Elephant" in your settings) and you can also use it via browser extension.
