Hello. I'm Lee, I'm an IT worker located in the capital of Alberta. This is my personal account, so don't bother following if you don't want to see:

various pictures (probably of my cats)

personal updates and musings

I have a degree in Political Science but I haven't exercised that knowledge meaningfully in years.

I've had profiles elsewhere, I think this is where I'm settling down though.

You ever think about how crazy it is that in 2019, the richest 1% of the world’s population (77 million people) produced as much carbon pollution as the poorest 66% of humanity (5 billion people)?

"Most people are not especially sophisticated news consumers who follow professional advice on how to differentiate fake or false content from real news, so these developments seem quite dangerous."

This. There should be a media literacy class or two in junior or high school.

So sick of hearing about Trump as a non-American but there are some interesting ideas in here.
When Hillary Clinton called MAGA supporters “deplorables,” it was in the news forever. We still talk about it today. But when Trump called his political enemies “vermin”—actually invoking the words of Adolf Hitler—the press just moves on like it’s nothing. They are failing us.

Watching this video, I'm struck by how important urbanism is as we age. The video is about loneliness and our apart-ness, but the city offers the possibility of connection.

Cities ideally offer environments where family and friends can live close by and it's easy to have low-key time together at home or various locations out.

Beyond that, the city offers exercise and stimulation. Even small things like walking to the shops keeps us healthy and mobile as we age. The array of things going on and buildings keep our minds fresh.

Individualism and self-reliance may work well in one's 30s and 40s, but they don't age well. We need environments for those who can't drive. We need environments that facilitate social interactions. And I worry that we've built a society where we keep ourselves apart - and that physical distance turns into social distance and loneliness, especially as we age.

The shift to larger vehicles has damaged progress on climate, energy security and diversification, as energy demand and CO2 emissions could have fallen by over 30% between 2010-2022 if vehicles had stayed the same size (via https://www.globalfueleconomy.org/blog/2023/november/heaviest-ever-suvs-massively-undermine-climate-benefits-of-other-vehicle-improvements-says-new-gfei-report) https://www.globalfueleconomy.org/media/792523/gfei-trends-in-the-global-vehicle-fleet-2023-spreads.pdf
