“Rocket launches didn’t get Americans to believe in space travel, the media did,“ says author Walt Hickey. Hear the compelling story of how movies in the 1950s helped prepare the public for space travel, long before NASA was created. It’s “Your Mind on Movies” on Big Picture Science.

@xtaldave this is shockingly similar to the absurd immigration detention that Australia has, along with the ‘stop the boats’ slogan. A ridiculous bonfire of money is burned on it every years.

23andMe was hacked and DNA records of 7 million people were compromised. Originally they said it was 14,000.

They just sent out an innocuous sounding email about change in Terms of Service.

If you do not respond rejecting the change, you will give up the ability to be part of the class action lawsuits that are being filed, or take action in court against them.

They sent this out before they are notifying those whose data were breached.

Strongly recommend you opt out of the change.

@tanepiper @cstross Isn't there a phenomenon that when a business is about to fail and go through a painful change, the board put a woman or person of colour in charge? The term is a Glass Cliff, and this article makes mention of it, even mentioning the phenomenon appearing in the conservative party when it looks like a seat might be lost. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/economy/women-often-put-charge-failing-companies
Why women are often put in charge of failing companies

The glass cliff is a phenomenon in which women are more likely to be put into leadership roles under risky and precarious circumstances.

@pluralistic This article reminds me of how my ex-father in law was ripped off in the UK. He had a gold plated defined benefits pension scheme from Rolls Royce and when he took early redundancy from there a few years from retirement age in the early noughties he decided to see a financial advisor. The FA advised him he would see great returns by removing his pension from the scheme and putting it into a pension plan exposed to the share market. You, know, the worst possible plan for a person close to retirement with a defined benefits scheme. He took this advice and paid the advisor for his help in setting up the pension.

It didn't take long for him to discover just how badly he had been advised and he took the FA to the ombudsman over it. In the course of events he found out the FA had been self-dealing, getting paid by the pension company for taking his money as well as being paid by him. The FA filed for bankruptcy just before court action ruled in his favour and he had to claim money from a compensation scheme instead, which was far less than he was owed. Instead of retiring he went back to work as a handyman for several years.

@pluralistic no worries - was just concerned you were going to double up your costs. Unfortunately my name is terribly unusual so I don’t have much hope in finding someone ;)

We would be greatful if you could amplify our voice & let your followers know that the Auschwitz Memorial is present in #fediverse: @auschwitzmuseum

Every day we commemorate the victims & educate about the tragic human history of #Auschwitz.

Auschwitz is a place that shows where hatred, antisemitism and contempt for a fellow man led people decades ago.

It is also a place where we should reflect on our individual and collective responsibility for the world we live in.

Legitimately heartwarming. In 1920 a 6 y'old girl was bitten by a snake and a Royal Australian Navy ship was the closest medical help. At the time the RAN wasn't allowed to render medical aid to civilians, so the captain enlisted her on the spot so she could be treated. She was discharged after eight days of service.

@pluralistic hi! I don’t know if this is a common error, but I received two copies of “The Internet Con” in two different shipments. I checked kickstarter and I appear to have only paid for one. I hope this hasn’t been too widespread! I’m looking forward to reading one and keeping one in pristine condition…
@talia_christine are these pigs nose to tail or stacked side by side? I don’t think this new sizing system compares favourably to the standard cubit.
