Hi folks! Is anyone attending #ESA in Portland next month? Reasons to go/not go? Need a room share? 😇

Science is so incredibly smelly. That’s all I’ll say.

Hypotrachyna minarum is a lichen with so called "isidiate apothecia", meaning it has very spiky cups. The cups are filled with dark brown spores giving it a very unique look. Found on Sunday in southern Ohio.

Do you know why people ask for #AltText to be added into photography?

You might be unaware, but there are those of us on Mastodon who would love to see and experience the same jokes and information that others share. Unfortunately, we have gaps in our ability to fully immerse ourselves.

For some, that manifests with lurking or following a lot of accounts but not really engaging. Perhaps they are anxious or have social struggles. They want to be included in a way that makes them feel safe. It's wonderful that tools like Mastodon allow for that.

For some of us, it's a lot harder. We have restrictions into how we can take in the world around us physically. You see it manifest in the physical in small ways (door handles that are levers not twists) or in larger ways (enforcement of ramp access, hearing interpreters, etc.)

For those of us who require additional support like guided sight to help us navigate complex and dangerous systems the world can seem very threatening when people don't seem to notice or care about your limitations.

AltText allows those of us who aren't able to fully engage visually. Sometimes we're blind, or have sight challenges, sometimes we're not able to focus on the screen and use auditory assistance.

Whatever the reason - help your fellow Mastodonians will you? Simply remark on the infographic, meme, or photo with a description of what we should be seeing. It doesn't have to be super complex.

Its a small and easy way to better improve the ecosystem around us.

Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! A new spider genus!

Meet Abba transversa—named for the pop group ABBA—a new genus and species of orb-weaver in the family Araneidae. Scientists identified it from specimens that were collected in coastal areas of Queensland and New South Wales in Australia, and the name was inspired by the band's songs and the "Mamma Mia!" film musicals, which "provided hours of entertainment for the authors." 🕷️ https://phys.org/news/2023-03-spider-genus-band-abba.html #science #NewSpecies #spider #ABBA

New spider genus named after pop band ABBA

Spiders of the family Araneidae are known for building vertical orbicular webs to catch prey. They can be easily identified by their eye pattern, the abdomen normally overlapping the carapace, and complex genitalia. The family currently has 188 genera and 3,119 species worldwide.

The melting snow on the trees also made it a good #LichenSubscribe day.
Is there any #SunkCostFallacy discourse on here about ‘wasting’ your degree?

Here's a new one for me: crater lichen, genus Diploschistes. Just a couple of small patches growing near a crack on a granite outcrop, among some moss. Rubbery texture. Lakeview Mountains, about an hour ago. Never noticed it before today, even though I've been by that spot many times.
