Every time policymakers or private companies tried to undermine your rights online during the last Trump administration, we were there. In preparation for the next four years, here’s just some of the groundwork we’ve already laid: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/11/2024-us-election-over-eff-ready-whats-next
The 2024 U.S. Election is Over. EFF is Ready for What's Next.

The dust of the U.S. election is settling, and we want you to know that EFF is ready for whatever’s next. Our mission to ensure that technology serves you—rather than silencing, tracking, or oppressing you—does not change. Some of what’s to come will be in uncharted territory. But we have been preparing for whatever this future brings for a long time. EFF is at its best when the stakes are high.

If like me you are (sadly) not in Salzburg for the #useR2024 conference, you can still watch all the presentations from last week's virtual, pre-in-real-life useR conference!

Microsoft states that some intrusive pre-built reports that expose worker metrics are not available in Germany. I wonder why? Perhaps because of the stronger German workplace data protection laws?

I think that Microsoft should generally remove individual-level metrics and filters from its reports, including from the 'predictive work duration' report.

I had a wonderful time at the ACM Web Science Conference in Stuttgart last week, presenting work with @antisomniac, @ethanz and some other folks who aren't on fediverse on the modeling approaches behind https://redditmap.social/, a joint project with https://publicinfrastructure.org/. You can read our paper "Here Be Livestreams: Trade-offs in Creating Temporal Maps of Reddit" at https://doi.org/10.1145/3614419.3643999.

I wrote a quick tutorial to help people save time entering events onto a calendar. You need a ChatGPT 4 subscription to do this for now, but I'm sure you will be able to do this on other systems (and even more easily) soon. https://erickaakcire.medium.com/use-ai-to-quickly-import-a-paper-or-pdf-schedule-to-your-calendar-app-c6a43940118e
Use AI to Quickly Import a Paper or PDF Schedule to Your Calendar App

Upload a photo, screenshot, or PDF of a schedule to ChatGPT 4, ask it to create a calendar file, and upload it to your calendar. Bam!

Next was a fantastic talk by @mako on the lifecycles of peer-produced knowledge commons at CITP. Mako examines the evolution of different Wikipedia communities, revealing fascinating growth and decline dynamics and relating them to the openness of the platform. He then goes into why absolute openness often becomes undesirable, but the partial closure has some negative effects. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80KLt-ec6ic (8/9) #wikipedia

In case you are wondering how usage of AI and consent is going, I just was in a 12 person working group meeting where 4 people who were not there had "AI" transcription/note-taking services join without any sort of warning beforehand.
Read why "Web Environment Integrity" is terrible, and why we must vocally oppose it now. Google's latest maneuver, if we don't act now to stop it, threatens our freedom to explore the Internet with browsers of our choice: https://u.fsf.org/40a #EndDRM #Enshittification #Google #WebStandards #DefectiveByDesign
