@Thomas I'm open to the idea that I didn't catch the shadow of the hat at the beginning, so it could be just all Clark's deal.

I guess I was thinking we don't get Mary monsters (or Kat's or her boyfriend's) because they got pulled into Clark's mess, not the other way around, so they're dealing with his monsters. But maybe that makes less sense than it all just being like a horrific Being John Malkovich.

@Thomas Also just saw it, and I think I feel like the monster is unique to the person in the backrooms? So the guy at the beginning met his fate at the hands of a monster that was his own design and didn't know how to or that he could control it.

Clark found out he could control his monsters in the backrooms (just not in the real world) and the tall one maybe couldn't be controlled in the presence of Mary because she was a threat to its existence?
