I am a full stack web developer focused on LAMP, Drupal, and Wordpress, IT manager, and occasional consultant. I’ve managed IT departments at a Emory and Cornell law schools, and started my professional career as a reference law librarian while working my way through law school at Syracuse. I’m the chief technologist for CALI, the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Education, a consortium of US law schools.
I've been building systems for legal ed and accessing the law for over 30 years.

Started training a small BERT model yesterday afternoon using generic data. So far so good. Extra cooling and a round of software updates seems to help with temperatures and performance. If it keeps running it should finish in about 25 hours or around 1:30 PM ET on 7/9/2023.
If it finishes, and the model works, in going to delve into how to prepare some relevant legal ed data for training a model. Question: what can we do with a model trained on everything a 1L needs to learn?

My new social media app is called Grouse. You can only post criticism of the 3,000 other new social media apps.

Posts are called “Gripes.” No likes or reposts—just one button to “Commiserate.” If a Gripe receives enough Commiseration it’s elevated by the algorithm into a “Complaint.”

Also there’s an academic version called “Faculty Meeting.”

So on one level AI is causing everyone stress but I asked for a Lee Harvey Oswald corporate branding logo and

Here’s a great quick start guide to getting Jupyter Notebook and Lab up and running with the Miniconda environment in WSL2 running Ubuntu. When you’re finished walking through the steps you’ll have a great data science space up and running on your Windows machine.

I am going to explain how to configure Windows 10 and Miniconda to work with Notebooks using WSL2

FWIW, my lab @SuffolkLITLab works on market failures (e.g., providing assistance to folks who can't afford traditional legal assistance). Money is a constant battle because we're trying to help folks who don't have any. If you happen to be rich or know someone who is, please let them know that we take donations, and we even have a membership model if they like their names on things. See https://suffolklitlab.org/docs/affiliates.pdf [And yes, we're a 501(c)(3)] #law #LawFedi #donate #charity
Here's some promising results: under the hood a GPT-powered agent chose a strategy of 1. Collecting an ontology from a Blawx endpoint, 2. Encoding facts in that ontology, 3. Sending those facts to the "interview" endpoint, and 4. Generating a natural language statement of the answer. The interface still looks like ChatGPT, but by giving it the ability to use Blawx as a tool to solve problems, there is no risk of hallucination, and the reasons are explainable. #RulesAsCode #LawFedi #LegalTech

OK, I've gone as far as I can go without GPT4 API access. Extremely promising results, but I'm stymied by 3.5-turbo.

Anyone out there have a license they are in a position to create and share a key for? The prototyping is low volume, and I'm happy to compensate for the tokens if required. #LawFedi #LegalTech #GPT4
