@claudiom @NebulaTide Agreed, #WebBrowsers have all strayed so far and there's no right answer anymore. It's no longer a matter of "correctness" in support, more privacy & security. They're probably all around the same security-wise (as far as you can throw them) and privacy-wise (all just marketing). Those of us on #OpenBSD have it slightly better because they use at least some #pledge & #unveil, plus a number of privacy-reducing settings are disabled during build/packaging.

*Update: I retract my previous statement of "stable" it absolutely cannot handle large amounts of tabs upon startup...*

*Update 2: Added another 8GB of ram to my laptop... better*

Gnome Web is getting decently stable now 👀
I've been using it for *all* web-browsing for the past 5 days and it's only crashed once (tbf... I had over 200 tabs)!

So happy to not have to use Firefox or Chrome.
And it can handle my 100+ tab rabbit holes like a charm.

The Register: Stop the slop by disabling AI features in Chrome . “Most of today’s desktop web browsers come with a ton of built-in AI features, but the good news is that, in most cases, no one is forcing you to use them, and you can at least hide them from view. Removing the most egregious AI tools from Chrome is pretty simple, but it requires a few steps.”

So I am looking for a new privacy web browser.

I tried to write this a few times but I don't know how to phrase it without upsetting anyone, it is not my intention, please if you feel offended can you keep scrolling?

I don't want a browser that saves zero local data (Klar, Mullvad, Tor). I also for one reason or another don't want Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, Brave.

I intend to use it in desktop environment and I use a VPN that I trust.

Other than what is already stated what I prioritize quick security patching and privacy. I guess third is minimal bloat.

Trying to enter with with an open mind and I am open to both FF forks and Chromium forks.

Justification to why your preferred one beats the other ones would also be much appreciated!

Thank you in advance! :)

P.S. other than privacy badger, what are some must have essential add-ons/extensions?

TechCrunch: OpenAI says AI browsers may always be vulnerable to prompt injection attacks. “Even as OpenAI works to harden its Atlas AI browser against cyberattacks, the company admits that prompt injections, a type of attack that manipulates AI agents to follow malicious instructions often hidden in web pages or emails, is a risk that’s not going away anytime soon — raising questions about […]

How to lose a few hours:
Suddenly Chrome starts to stop rendering kanjis, kanjis only, kanas are fine, the problem occurs only on some websites while others are fine, same problem in Firefox, get lost into the weeds trying to understand how the CSS font-family gets translated into a real local font, get lost into the weeds about Chrome font settings, get lost into the weeds about the same problem occuring due to experimental functionalities in Chrome, find that the problem occurs when Chrome uses a mysterious font called manabiya-ichou for whatever reason despite no reference to that font can be found anywhere, find out that this font even crashes a text editor when you try to use it, completely delete that font from the system, everything gets back to normal.

IIRC the thing w/ Librewolf isn't that it's WIP (it's basically the latest FF but tweaked), it's that its default security & privacy settings are strict & thus many websites fail, & the user has to get adept at tweaking settings for specific must-have sites.

A big Opera fan back in the day, used Vivaldi for a few years but when I left non-free OS, felt I needed to leave non-free #WebBrowsers behind, too.

Now: Zen Browser (0 AI). Past: Floorp, Firedragon, FF, Falkon, LW

I'll be more than happy to try #Vivaldi when it becomes free software, meaning when we users are completely free to run, study, modify, and share it. Let's hope that day comes soon! Until then, we must resist compromising these essential freedoms—both individually and collectively—no matter how well-intentioned or technically excellent it may appear.
