Studying and researching mathematics at university. Interested in the intersection of dynamical systems, probability theory, numerical methods, & simulations broadly, with a strong emphasis on theory. Currently researching extinction dynamics in ecosystems combining it all!

Developed the plant-growing simulation game Idu and the game engine behind it in Rust with @johann, occasional contributor now.

Iโ€™m open about this because I think itโ€™s worse when youโ€™re struggling in silence and feel like youโ€™re grieving projects and community put on hold. Itโ€™s not something you can keep hidden even if you wanted to as it affects all aspects of your life 24/7. But itโ€™ll be okay as it no longer feels like wandering in the dark! Iโ€™m grateful to you all ๐Ÿ’œ

As a bonus, please try this at home: strawberry jam on the bottom, (oat) milk, and matcha topped with white chocolate shavings. Banana to scale.

I have mean entropy values for a structural collapse threshold over 100 trials, and mean maximum entropy values for the ecosystems I am simulating. They have their own standard deviations. Since they are covariant, I calculated their covariance matrix and I'm hoping that using this approach to Fieller's theorem would work; found only one implementation that followed arxiv.org/pdf/0710.2024.pdf, but it would require doing the same calculation for 100 samples, whereas I'm using a precomp matrix

I wrote two years ago about what it means to synthesize concepts, create new rules and systems instead of merely following instructions, and what it means to consider software mathematically (itโ€™s not category theory. and I also wrote why category theory is misunderstood and how to stop doing that).

This is a walkthrough of mathematical thinking via creating a toy graph theory etc, to inspire you to do math.

Also, thereโ€™s abductive logic. Itโ€™s relevant to AI doomposts.

Creating a Mathematical Theory of Software

If youโ€™ve ever had fun tinkering with programming puzzles and games yet dislike math in educational settings, there might be a good reason, and youโ€™re not alone. Despite that, you mightโ€™ve been doing mathematics without wielding the full power of its toolkit.

Here's an intro to my #simulation work on plausible ecosystems of the Permian-Triassic where I created probabilistic networks of ancient feeding behaviors based on a collection of fossil specimens.

I wrote this for my university's Maths & Stats department newsletter, OpenInterval, and the full version is available here: https://www3.open.ac.uk/documents/3/zx24111149225320.pdf

More details and our discoveries will be available in the paper once it's out ๐Ÿ˜Š

Just realised Iโ€™ve become Ian Malcolm because Iโ€™m researching extinction dynamics in ecosystems based on paleontological dataโ€ฆ using dynamical systems theory (aka chaos theory, Ianโ€™s specialty), probability theory, and lots of fun graph theory shenanigans. Ian didnโ€™t have to look at fossil data though and had access to the real deal, but I get to say โ€œchaos theoryโ€ just as much ๐Ÿฆ–

Automation canโ€™t be avoided if youโ€™re using magic โ€” say hello to the new Shrinkulator!

We just released the demo version 12 โœจ including drawing lines to build, auto-shrinking, and increased inventory size, as everyone found the previous building system annoying.
