Studying and researching mathematics at university. Interested in the intersection of dynamical systems, probability theory, numerical methods, & simulations broadly, with a strong emphasis on theory. Currently researching extinction dynamics in ecosystems combining it all!

Developed the plant-growing simulation game Idu and the game engine behind it in Rust with @johann, occasional contributor now.

In case you too ever wondered why networks of nodes and edges are called "graphs":
Life update: I think having been untreated for years has been harder than accepting organ damage from my immune system attacking my eyes, lungs and cardiovascular system and finally getting treated. I donโ€™t know how irreversible some damage is, but I am on the right track to getting better. Currently prioritizing that
@furey So excited for her.

Iโ€™m open about this because I think itโ€™s worse when youโ€™re struggling in silence and feel like youโ€™re grieving projects and community put on hold. Itโ€™s not something you can keep hidden even if you wanted to as it affects all aspects of your life 24/7. But itโ€™ll be okay as it no longer feels like wandering in the dark! Iโ€™m grateful to you all ๐Ÿ’œ

As a bonus, please try this at home: strawberry jam on the bottom, (oat) milk, and matcha topped with white chocolate shavings. Banana to scale.

Hi all, long time no see. I wish I could be online more and that it didnโ€™t seem like I abandoned the game and everything, but you mightโ€™ve seen me post sometimes that Iโ€™m sick. Well, I found out that Iโ€™ve been sick with an autoimmune disease for years and itโ€™s been progressing until now, however Iโ€™m finally getting treatment. Thereโ€™s lots of sadness and guilt over diminishing ability over the years. I might be gone but Iโ€™m fighting to come back and make all the things!
@toadkarter This depends on your current background. For example, starting from elementary algebra moving up to functions and then โ€œactualโ€ pure maths is very underrated if you havenโ€™t done math in a decade. Or, if you have just studied school or uni level calculus then the recommendations would be very different as to where to go next. In most game dev, only a small subset of linear algebra is used and basic mechanics.
@jj @boarders @jonmsterling I agree with you completely. I wasnโ€™t good at getting my point across: remote learning, as demanded from unis during the pandemic and letting lecturers carry all of the weight, was bad because it couldnโ€™t have went better since there was nothing to support it, but thatโ€™s the reason why so many lecturers are completely burnt out *and* institutions are throwing out the idea completely. Info being available freely is beside the point.
@boarders @jonmsterling Basically there needs to be a lot of funding to support proper remote learning but the way it was done during the pandemic in regular unis is not it and it's good that we are throwing that out, yet we should be thinking how to make it better and get funding for developing these programs because there are a lot of people who wouldn't be able to study otherwise. Just having lectures recorded and lecture notes online is nothing in comparison to what we could have.
@boarders @jonmsterling Most universities are not designed for remote learning like e.g The Open University is, which functions very differently from MOOC-type courses or like whatever universities were forced to do during the pandemic. We have small lectures/tutorials where students are actively engaged, we have our own books that are externally reviewed all the time and are very well-made, and most students (esp those who continue year after year) are super motivated. 1/2
