BROKEN VOICES - πŸ‡¨πŸ‡Ώ πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡°

Subtle, based-on-true-story drama about grooming and abuse in a prestigious girls' choir. Beautifully acted by its young cast

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

FRAULEIN - πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

A young woman from Bosnia changes the outlook of an older woman from Yugoslavia ('No-one calls it that any more') through what the blurb calls 'an unlikely friendship'. Solid enough, but hits a few too many cliches along its way

⭐ ⭐ ⭐

FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD - πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Postcard pretty York Notes adaptation of the novel that hits most of the major plot points but completely misses the soul of the book by flattening the story down to a bucolic romance.

Also, Bathsheba Everdene is so modern, she doesn't know the origin of her own first name. In 19th century England? O...K.

But it's zippy and I can't pretend I wasn't entertained

⭐ ⭐ ⭐

AURORA - πŸ‡·πŸ‡΄

Imagine Chantal Akerman had made Taxi Driver. It's a little bit like that

β€’ FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER β€’
Classic, episodic Jim Jarmusch.

β€’ TIME OF THE GYPSIES β€’
A bit magical, but mostly pure realism accompanied by spectacular songs.

β€’ IL MARE β€’
1962, the year of MMF love triangles in European cinema. This one’s openly gay, unlike subtexted Jules and Jim.

β€’ DEATH IN VENICE β€’
Nice adaptation, but yes, the book was better.

β€’ MY CHILD β€’
Interviews with parents of queer kids from Turkey.

β€’ ABOUT ELLY β€’
Drama/thriller from Iran. Tense.

Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie was nominated for Achievement in Music - Original Song for "The Alphabet Song."

If you haven't seen this (joyous) movie, please go to this Bluesky post and watch the clip to see why this is so very funny to me.

I'm working on my Johnny Gilbert saying "This. Is. Jeopardy!" but my wife's notes suggest that I sound like I've only just regained hearing after losing it at a young age.

I took about a 30 minute nap this afternoon. When I came to, I had a scene from Vermiglio (2024) in my head and it made me misty eyed.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt28618488

It's streamable via the Criterion Channel and for free through some libraries via Kanopy.

(Some of y'all can use your U-M login - https://www.kanopy.com/en/umich - and I think you should.)

Notes:

1. Interesting that there was a tie at the Oscars this year for Best Live-Action Short, and that it was between The Singers (pandering feel-good schlock) and Two People Exchanging Saliva (truly great/original, like if Yorgos Lanthimos were French).

2. Challengers is a blast. I needed this rewatch, it made me feel alive.

3. Neither stand-up special is family-friendly/SFW, but if you need to laugh at utter absurdity, or a dizzying dissection of self and sucking off, well then cheers!

Uh, 15 for #LetterboxdFriday(!), so a little different post:

THE APU TRILOGY

β€’ Pather Panchali (1955)
β€’ Aparajito (1956)
β€’ Apur Sansar (1959)

Coming-of-age in the style of Bengali neorealism. I liked them all, but the first one, Pather Panchali, the most.
