So I went to #BSidesLV this week but had to duck out before #defcon. I hadn’t been to a security con since BSidesSF in Feb 2020. So much has obviously happened since then, including me having moved away from #DFIR and into the security awareness space. Before the pandemic, I was already pretty jaded by security. Over the pandemic I also have grown very jaded of tech and capitalism, which in turn caused me to push away my security career by association. But @BSidesLV unexpectedly reminded me of what I love about security, particularly detection engineering and threat hunting. It’s got me excited about the future of my security career for the first time in a long time. I still desperately want to advance my writing and photography work as well. But lucky for me, security pays really well and can fund my art 😆 I’ve just got to figure out how to do it all and not fall into capitalistic business that is so easy to do.

My cover story on Pinky Yun was published two weeks ago in the Metro! Sorry I didn’t post here sooner. But it’s the story I’ve worked the hardest on, by far.

San Jose Tattoo Legend Pinky Yun Inspires New Book | Metro Silicon Valley | Silicon Valley’s Leading Weekly

Vehicles blaze down San Carlos Street in both directions near San Jose’s midtown. The commotion easily overpowers the whisper of footsteps from the occasional pedestrian, only heard during the serene relief of a red light. Just west of Willard Avenue, next to a used car lot, lies a long white building capped with a blue […]

My story on Pink Yun is done! He was a legendary Hong Kong tattoo artist who spent the latter half of his career in San Jose. Publication was pushed out to next week to the 26th! Look for it in the Metro 🙌🏻

Making a living as a writer in 2023 is so weird. Your choices are:

* nepo baby staff writer for legacy media fawning over billionaires and peddling fascism
* writing 3 email newsletters a week and making the most obscure one subscriber only
* organizing a community of your fans and charging for access to it
* starting your own publishing business and asking fans to pay you up front to write the next book
