My book, “Our Better Nature”, was rejected for a publicity program because I have lesbian characters in it.
To be clear: The book is not about lesbian relationships or culture. It’s about women with weather-wrangling powers who are fixing climate change. Just… two of those women are clearly stated as being in a loving committed relationship that involves sex, okay?
Out of more than 120 characters in the book.
Of those 120+ people, you could point to six that one could safely assume are heterosexual (or perhaps bi), in that they produced offspring and are still the gender assigned at birth. No guarantee, of course – queer people have babies too. And there are a few others whose behavior suggests heterosexual, but it is not explicitly stated.
Of the others, more than a hundred, it just doesn’t matter. They might be straight, gay, trans, queer, bi, pan, etc… and it doesn’t matter. Because – hey – they are people. And yes, most of those characters are “background”, or NPCs, in game lingo. Some of them are critical to the storyline, and it still doesn’t matter.
Point being – people are people, in real life and in fiction, and most of the time, who they love and what they do with them… does not matter.
Anyway – The book is on sale. It’s good. Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Boulder Bookstore.
