This is my Apple ad parody. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
You've probably seen the tone-deaf ad from Apple about their new super thin iPad. I get the concept they were going for—it's like a thousand devices rolled into one, but the way the ad was shot revels in destruction of beloved things and really hits a sour note that
Me, an idiot: “So, kids, by setting the thermostat a little lower and eating less meat, we’re doing our part to make the world more sustainable”
VCs, very smart: “We just raised $100 billion dollars from the sovereign wealth funds of three petrostates to build the world’s largest AI supercomputer. It uses as much power and water as Guatemala and the primary use case is for management consultants to autogenerate powerpoints for justifying mass layoffs.”
@collinsworth your post definitely resonated with me.
I've been a software developer for 20+ yrs and have put in my time in pretty much every part of the "the stack." But no matter where I work, I almost always end up being the only one (or one of the few) who enjoys spending time working on the front end. And I do enjoy it quite a bit.
Gradually, I've seen JS accepted as a "real language", but HTML, CSS, a11y. An afterthought. "Pixel pushing".
Because email is an open protocol the big players in email are much better behaved than they would be if it were a closed system (what if you could only send and receive email with other gmail users?... can you imagine?)
Since, "we live in a society" or, to be less glib, with capitalism, I don't think wide adoption of mastodon's protocol will happen *without* some gmail-like players emerging.
