This is my Apple ad parody. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Apple's message falls flat

You've probably seen the tone-deaf ad from Apple about their new super thin iPad. I get the concept they were going for—it's like a thousand devices rolled into one, but the way the ad was shot revels in destruction of beloved things and really hits a sour note that

A Whole Lotta Nothing
Something that is funny (read: not funny at all) to me as a front-end engineer who is on the front-end side of the spectrum is that anytime I've done or talked about promo papers, the one thing that is always brought up is "make sure you can show your ops work". Yet we have countless L6 engineers who don't know how to write CSS effectively or know anything about creating accessible UIs or using things like grid and new CSS methods to make layouts. That's never a barrier to them getting promoted.

Me, an idiot: “So, kids, by setting the thermostat a little lower and eating less meat, we’re doing our part to make the world more sustainable”

VCs, very smart: “We just raised $100 billion dollars from the sovereign wealth funds of three petrostates to build the world’s largest AI supercomputer. It uses as much power and water as Guatemala and the primary use case is for management consultants to autogenerate powerpoints for justifying mass layoffs.”

Because email is an open protocol the big players in email are much better behaved than they would be if it were a closed system (what if you could only send and receive email with other gmail users?... can you imagine?)

Since, "we live in a society" or, to be less glib, with capitalism, I don't think wide adoption of mastodon's protocol will happen *without* some gmail-like players emerging.

In this thread I'll explain why AND why maybe that isn't the worst possible outcome. 🧵 #thread #ui

So, don't tell anybody, but we're going to announce Palm Pilot emulation in the browser at Internet Archive in the next week or so. I've still got to get descriptions in for the hundreds of apps that are uploaded, and add a few more classics. But if you want to help with that, or just let me know how it's going, ping me here.

But don't tell anybody! It's a secret!

Hot take: many of today’s lighter options for building web apps (Svelte, Solid, Lit, Preact, Astro) are great.

Hotter take: folks gravitate to other options for good reasons too (ecosystem is a BIG one, well established education/docs/patterns, hiring has a wide pool). Though, not always the right fit.

Hottest take: there’s value in both web app & framework developers learning from newer solutions. The best way to predict the future is to create it & question what needs a rethink now and then.
