OK... *now* it's a race!

* We've got the first data suggesting a next generation Covid vaccine could outperform the Pfizer vax – it's authorized in one country & manufacture is ramping up.

* The number of nextgen vaxes reaching mid-stage trials (phase 2) is now in double digits.

* We've been hearing results of 2 clinical trials a month for the last 6 months.

Lots of news this month....1/2

My latest nextgen Covid vax update (no 14) @PLOS https://absolutelymaybe.plos.org/2024/02/23/picking-up-steam-next-generation-covid-vaccine-update-14/

Let’s be clear. Palestinian journalists said this since Day 1 and those who believed them were ridiculed or called antisemitic.

Now the NYT confirms “Israel claims it protects civilians, but a NYT investigation found at least 200 times Israel dropped its most destructive bombs in areas it designated as safe for civilians in Gaza.”

That’s no accident—it’s policy. Where is the accountability? #CeasefireNOW

I can't sleep

I can't sleep. I'm lying in bed every night, and images of Gaza are running through my head. Fathers holding their babies, dead, caked in dust. Bombs dropped on homes [1], on hospitals [2], on schools [3]. Tens of thousands of dead [4] in indiscriminate bombings [5]. Children crying, pulling

"This is a dangerous time for America. Trump is wielding eliminationist rhetoric with its historic purpose, always the same: giving permission. Permission for what hides in the darkest corners of the American psyche to emerge. Americans must be prepared to blunt the violence when it inevitably arrives."

Dear New Yorker, NYT, CNN, Washington Post, &c: stop interviewing Sam Altman and Geoffrey Hinton, and start interviewing Timnit Gebru, Meredith Whittaker, Emily Bender, Chris Gilliard, Rua Williams, Ruha Benjamin, Margaret Mitchell, Abeba Birhane, Alex Hanna, Kendra Albert, Jonathan Flowers, Robin Zebrowski, and like a bunch of other, better people to talk to about these things.

…By which i basically mean, "…stop being like you are and start being the kind of news outlets who would even begin to understand why you should stop interviewing [people in group a] and start interviewing [people in group b]."

@dalias @jimray seriously, the fact that nobody in charge of anything seems to have a clear-eyed grasp on the reality that their product is a massive bullshit machine trained by a massive plagarism machine and moderated by a massive real life human sweatshop is a pretty big liability as far as corporate governance goes.

There's no way that any innovation can turn these components into skynet so it's uncomfortable that they're so fixated on pretending that it can happen.

Written news articles often have a secret language to them which hints at the underlying reporting process - language like "according to **two people familiar with** the board’s deliberations".

I don't think these are at all obvious to people who haven't worked in news, so I wrote an article about them:

Deciphering clues in a news article to understand how it was reported

Deciphering clues in a news article to understand how it was reported

Written journalism is full of conventions that hint at the underlying reporting process, many of which are not entirely obvious. Learning how to read and interpret these can help you …

10,000 Sudanese killed & 5.6M displaced in civil war

10,000 Palestinians killed and 1M displaced in Gaza

1.7M Afghans forcibly deported out of Pakistan

This is unsustainable. This injustice must end. We need leaders committed to compassion and human rights.
