My birdbath garden at mom's old cottage. Bumblebees loved the globe thistle, fritillary butterflies swarmed the coneflowers, and the red bee-balm was guaranteed to draw ruby-throat hummingbirds. There's a serviceberry tree to the left of the glider and a witch hazel tree in the border behind it. A mail-order ginseng plant liked this location and reseeded itself. Photo by my mom.

"Since 2001, Ron Deibert has led Citizen Lab, the world's foremost "counterintelligence group for civil society," where they defend human rights activists, journalists and dissidents from the digital weapons deployed by the world's worst autocrats and thugs.

For decades, this tiny, barely resourced group at a Canadian university has gone toe to toe with the world's most powerful cyber arms dealers – and won."

Artist Margaret MacDonald of Glasgow began collaborating with her sister in their Hope Street studio, producing illustrations, panels, and leaded glass. Inspired by Celtic imagery, literature, symbolism, and folklore, Margaret later collaborated with her husband, architect/designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh. She exhibited with him at the 1900 Vienna Secession, where she was an influence on the Secessionist Gustav Klimt.

Adriana Brownlee, 23, has become the youngest woman to climb all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre-plus peaks. She made this climb without the use of supplementary oxygen, making it an even tougher challenge.

She reached the summit of Shishapangma, Tibet on October 9, three years after she topped Mount Everest.

Fewer than 100 people have climbed all 14 peaks, which are all in the Himalayas and Karakorum.

Diné leader and grassroots organizer Allie Young started the Ride to the Polls campaign in 2020 in response to the rapid spread of Covid-19 infections in the Navajo Nation, where some counties saw the highest death rates in the nation. This fall, she harnessed the trail ride to register new voters in person and online. On election day, 100 Indigenous voters will ride on horseback to their polling station in Arizona.
