Ecuador is one of the few countries in the world containing an article in its constitution that recognizes the right of natural features not to be degraded or polluted.
After Darío Iza’s group Kitu Kara filed a complaint on behalf of the river, a court in Ecuador has ruled that pollution violates the rights of the Machángara River, which runs through the country’s capital, Quito.
The city government appealed the ruling.
