Beaudouin's Snake-Eagle

Chunky dark brown raptor with a white belly marked by thin bars. Immatures are brown when perched, and show rufous patches in the underwing in flight. Found in savanna habitats. Soars frequently and sometimes hovers. Very similar to Short-toed Snake-Eagle, but has darker upperparts and narrower dark bars on the belly; the front of the underwings looks white and unbarred in flight. Immature similar to immature Black-breasted and Short-toed Snake-Eagles, but identified by the rufous patches on the underwings.

Yesterday I took some time off and walked at our local state park (Machicomico State Park, Gloucester County, VA, US). Thrilled to see hooded mergansers! #birds #birdphotography #wildlife #animals #nature

Sandhill cranes in flight, silhouetted against the sky and sunrise clouds.

Sandhill cranes seem to be among the more wary birds in the locations where I usually do my bird photography this time of year. On occasion, geese will not be uncomfortable within a few dozen feet of humans, especially later in...

eBird highlight photo:
Vermilion Flycatcher (*Pyrocephalus rubinus*) at Las Cienegas NCA, Arizona, back in September 2016. A memorable moment from a wonderful birding vacation based out of a cabin up on Madera Canyon.

Need to get back there some year, though maybe trek out to some of the more remote, less-trafficked regions.

Quoth the raven: "Screw this."

There's a map going around that shows counts of venomous species by country. In addition to being interesting to look at, it highlights the problems that arise when you use political boundaries for geospatial data. Country size and range obscures biogeographical pattern. We see this with Russia, but the silliest example is the coloration of Alaska.

Just something worth keeping in mind when thinking about geographic data.
