We study the source to sink movement of dust in the critical zone. One of nine Clusters in the Critical Zone Collaborative Network.

Work by Cluster member Janice Brahney is cited in this article from Plant Cuttings.

"Maybe this phenomenon could be turned to the advantage of humankind? Since MPs are accumulated by plants, maybe those same plants could be used to absorb MPs from the air (and soil), so that other plants have less of a plastic burden to bear and are less harmful to other biota?"

Microplastics and plants: A surprising connection

Ye Li et al. (2025) discovered that maize leaves absorb airborne microplastics (MPs) through stomata. Finding MPs in vascular tissues, they could potentially move within the plant, e.g., into devel…

Cluster scientist spotlight!

Sarah Chan, PhD PhD Student, Plant and Wildlife Sciences, Brigham Young University

What advice do you have for students interested in science?

"If you're interested in the environment, learn as much as you can! There is always more to know about our world, and the more your learn, the more you'll be able to figure out what new things YOU can discover."

Apply for CZ-N🌍N Support

The Critical Zone Network of Networks project was funded by the National Science Foundation AccelNet Program to bring together people from the global CZ science community. If you are seeking support to attend one of our events, we encourage you to apply for support in the form below. Each application will be reviewed separately within two weeks of submission. We will contact you to let you know if you have been selected to receive support. Financial support will be available as a stipend following your participation in the events you will be attending. If you have any questions, please feel free to email CZ-NON Project Manager, Cheryl Manning at cherylm@middlebury.edu.

Dust particles are small. But they can pose a big danger. That's why we're studying how and why they move through the Critical Zone.

And also why these aerospace engineers are testing new airplane engines to see how they handle dust.
