Considering spinning up an sgf.social mastodon instance. Anyone have receipts for costs running an instance with a few hundred users?
Probably not a lot of people know this now, but Mastodon's web app started out with "Publish". In 2016 a famous YouTuber jokingly offered to support Mastodon's Patreon forever if I changed the button to say "Toot" instead. Needless to say, this was a really early, and not very informed decision. The first glimpse of attention and financial support. As a non-native speaker I had no idea there was another meaning.
#Portland is beautiful today ❤️

In his latest post, Emotional Speed Bumps, Ed Batista talks about the importance of raising your awareness of "low-level" emotions as a leader. Doing so allows you to take control of priorities that you may not feel like addressing by structuring your time.

Developing a mindfulness practice and consistently getting ample sleep have both had a outsized impact on my ability to recognize and respond to "low-level" feelings about work.

Experimenting with standing up a Mastodon server for the better part of this afternoon has deepened my respect and appreciation for the folks running servers out there. These are complicated systems and they’re not cheap to operate.

If your server accepts donations, and you have some room in your budget, think about chipping in to help cover server costs. Building a better internet is expensive.

@[email protected] finally figured out the local file storage issue. For some reason, cache directories inside the Docker volume mount were owned by root. Haven't figured out why, but running exec as root in the container and fixing the permissions resolved it. *now* I have a functioning Mastodon instance 😉
@[email protected] it took some elbow grease to configure the server for docker-compose and map the setup process to container commands, but other than that things were pretty straightforward. I'm snagged on Paperclip file storage. Hard drive storage was causing permission errors, and S3 storage is returning Access Denied. It's been a minute since I mucked around with S3 permissions. Once I get it sorted, I think I'll tear it down and build a new instance fresh.
New Mastodon instance is up! Ran into a few issues setting it up with docker-compose, but managed to work out all the kinks. Having an instance closer to home will make a huge difference when it comes to performance.

It's been a while since I setup a new service in AWS. Let's see how long it takes me to stand up a Mastodon instance.
