Re this post from yesterday - https://climatejustice.social/@breadandcircuses/112173089016569816

Several commenters pointed out that while planting a tree is helpful, keeping existing forests intact, not cutting trees down, is even more important!

They’re right, obviously. We need to save mature forests, preserving their biodiversity and resilience — because monoculture tree plantations are *not* forests.

Even inside a city, though, trees can make a big difference in so many ways...

Attached: 1 image I noticed another article scolding “doomers” for doing it wrong. It says we shouldn’t make people sad or angry about what capitalist industry is doing to our climate and environment. The article claims a better approach is to give people hope, and emphasize positive steps they can take like planting a tree or riding a bike. Well, sure, those things are good, and I encourage them. But even if everyone who reads this post or sees that article stops driving a car in favor of bike riding and also cheerfully begins planting trees, that still will not make any significant difference in altering the trajectory of climate breakdown. The problem we face is much bigger than your carbon footprint or mine. And whether you feel happy or sad after reading this, that certainly will not affect the motivation of the oligarchs who own our society. Their only concern is to make more money and gain more power. Of course you and I should take appropriate individual actions (drive less, fly less, buy less, etc.), but we also should recognize that while those actions are important, they are not sufficient. Because what we need is system change. That will not be easy, but it’s essential. To get a comprehensive level of system change — which is the only kind that offers any true hope of avoiding complete disaster — we must remove all those currently in power, including the billionaires who control the politicians, and replace the current system with a different one. We must end capitalism and commence degrowth. Yes, this is a big ask. But we're talking about life or death here, literally. So it's a bold choice we must make. #Environment #Climate #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #Degrowth

You’d think “it’s easier for many phones to render PUBG than modern websites” would be an industry-wide wake-up call, but. https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/modern-web-bloat-means-some-entry-level-phones-cant-run-simple-web-pages-and-load-times-are-high-for-pcs-some-sites-run-worse-than-pubg
Modern web bloat means some pages load 21MB of data - entry-level phones can't run some simple web pages, and some sites are harder to render than PUBG
