It's been a while, so here's a post to say that Kind.Social is entirely funded by Users Like You™.
It's the collective contributions from a wide swath of folks here which pay for the admin/moderation of the server, and I am so thankful that y'all continue to make this whole thing possible. Kind.Social is one of the longer running servers on the Fediverse, and it wouldn't still be here today without all your help.

Thank you.

WE are the algorithm here

Here's a small tip for Unix and Linux developers and IT pros: Want to run the same command again at the terminal? In most modern shells (tcsh, zsh, bash), you can simply type "!!".

For example, say you forget to use sudo:
yum upgrade -y
pkg upgrade -y

Instead of typing the whole command again, just do this:
sudo !!

This is a lifesaver for longer commands. Give it a try!

Ethan Shone @openDemocracy makes the case that Rachel Reeves (and Labour more generally) are now a wholly own subsidiary of the financial services industry & are focussed on a corporate-privileging agenda.

While this may (or may not) be exaggerated (after all we might point to some non-corporate favouring actions this year), nonetheless as an overall trend it *does* explain Reeves' position taking (as I have also pointed out before).

Mastodon is great, found a festival about algorithms in Sheffield specifically with no AI and an interesting article on how we perceivedl gender

In the before times we used to run a festival called 'algomech' in Sheffield UK. The pandemic put paid to that but we're now coming back with a new small festival called Alpaca (festival of Algorithmic Patterns in the Creative Arts). If you are curious about strange patterns in different forms then this one is for you!

There'll be a top notch algorave with people writing code to make electronic dance music, also a concert with pattern-based instrumental music and closing party that'll be a blend of the two. Weekend passes for all three music events start at £22.

There will also be loads of talks about different kinds of strange patterns. We'll announce the hands-on workshops soon too - ~10 different workshops to choose from around patterns in juggling, textiles, music etc.. A mix of heritage/craft workshops and more tech-infused ones.

It'll be a bit unfashionable in having little or no AI stuff.. Any algorithms involved will be wholesomely handmade by humans, whether ancient procedures from craft/music practice or live coding/algorave.

More details here: https://2025.algorithmicpattern.org/sheffield/

+ There'll also be an online conference running through the event and into the following weekend, with watch parties in Berlin and Sheffield.
