Librarian, father, baker, runner, dancer, etc. As we say in our house, the other Dr. Askey. Work: Vice Provost and Chief Librarian at U of Alberta. He/him/his.
@mmccollow Whoa. Had to Google that one. I see why I missed it: I was living in Europe at the time and they never released it in Europe after it tanked in North America.
Was just reviewing a slide deck in Google Slides. Their little AI tool put a bubble at the bottom of slides--until I clicked it away--that reads "Beautify this slide." For one, I'm offended that it thinks my slides are ugly, but I also read it as "beatify this slide," which is a lot funnier. Oh holy slide deck ...
@djfiander @adr True, and a stellar reason to roll my eyes even harder about some of these programs.
@TeamMidwest Even worse is people offering relationship or psychological adivce based on a Reddit post. I find Reddit endlessly entertaining, but also profoundly and consistently horrifying in terms of what it reveals about learned helplessness and naiveté.
@adr Oh, totally. And it's really kind of lazy. I mean, I'm a tech astute person and I have literally zero idea what kind of processor is in my desktop or Chromebooks. More to the point, wtf would i care? Have network, can work. It's a hammer, not a surgical instrument.
@adr I think that says more about LIS programs than it does our organizations. I can only laugh out loud when I see a list of technical specifications like that. Feels very 1998, which is very on brand for LIS programs still.
Oh Britannica. Check out the map on their entry for Iqaluit and enjoy a laugh. How the mighty have slipped.

@weelibrarian That's a really good way of framing something we both see as an opportunity. How can we best invite people into our orgs that can grow that capacity in themselves? I tend to care more about aptitude and flexibility in candidates than I do about formal qualifications, not that all of these don't have roles to play.
@weelibrarian Great comeback! It just goes against the grain of what we have learned about who applies for jobs and how people find their way to seeing themselves in the role.
@weelibrarian Wow, that is an intimidating job posting. I haven't seen that many bullet points for qualifications in a very long time. A cataloging grantwriter with publishing experience.
