Dynamics of precipitation in transition:
The water source for the Galápagos Archipelago
under climate change.

📄 New paper out!

How might rainfall in the Galápagos change with climate variability?

Using a new measurement network (incl. vertical rain radar), we find:

• Warmer conditions → more rainfall, also more intense events
• More convective activity
• Inversion layer cool season weakened
• Cooler conditions → weaker, more variable rainfall

Overall: more water in a warmer world, but also higher risk from heavy rainfall.

Happy to discuss!

New paper published! “Local Sea Surface Temperatures Modulate the Occurrence of Heavy Rainfall Events in the Galápagos Archipelago” (Geophysical Research Letters, 2025). We identify 137 heavy-rainfall events between 1985–2024 — and show that local SST near the Galápagos strongly modulates rainfall extremes, more so than commonly used large-scale ENSO indices. 🌊🌧️ https://doi.org/10.1029/2025GL117553
Three years in the field can take a toll! Our stations in the Galápagos just received a full deep-maintenance checkup. A big thank-you to Sebastian Achilles for traveling to the islands to service, upgrade, and calibrate the equipment. We’re excited to continue collecting high-quality data for the project. #Science #FieldWork #Galapagos #ResearchInfrastructure #DataCollection #LongTermMonitoring #Galapagos #climate

New important paper published!
"Can Global Products Capture Precipitation Variability in the Galápagos Islands?" 🌧️ We assess global precipitation products using climatic time-series components in Galápagos Islands. 🔗 DOI: 10.1002/met.70085

Almost all stations are up and running during our March 2025 maintenance trip to the Galápagos! 🌴☔️ This year brought warm & rainy weather—quite a shift from 2024. Another great field experience in a unique place. #Galapagos #Fieldwork #StationMaintenance #dfg #climate #Galapagos
Fantastic field trip during 2024 to the Galapagos for our meeting and station performance check! 🌴 #Galapagos #FieldTrip #dfg #climate
