@DemosCat @lolgop other countries did very well, and it's on our media that most people did not hear about them- and politics, since one notable country isn't a member of the WHO.

Had more countries even half-assed their response, we wouldn't have as many variants.

Cases are finally down, but another variant and waning immunity could bring another wave- this summer or fall could be another unnecessary one.

Meanwhile I can't share this blog post on Meta, because it's news... I can't talk about a technical fubar on Twitter/X, because my government passed a bone-headed law, and then Meta had a fubared filter.

LOL.

Attached: 1 image Today's story includes a well-boosted post from @[email protected] about Twitter/X's colossal and hilarious screw-up trying to truncate all links ending in "twitter.com" to "x.com." Twitter's Clumsy Pivot to X.com is a Gift to Phishers On April 9, Twitter/X began automatically modifying links that mention "twitter.com" to redirect to "x.com" instead. But over the past 48 hours, dozens of new domain names have been registered that demonstrate how this change could be used to craft convincing phishing links -- such as fedetwitter[.]com, which is currently rendered as fedex.com in tweets. https://krebsonsecurity.com/2024/04/twitters-clumsy-pivot-to-x-com-is-a-gift-to-phishers/

Amphibians use #scream inaudible to humans for self-defense against predators, study suggests
For the first time in South America, researchers recorded the use of ultrasound by a frog endemic to the #AtlanticRainforest in Brazil, which has more species of amphibians than any other country. Other frogs may use very high-frequency calls.

WHO: “Famine in Gaza is imminent, with immediate and long-term health consequences”

Famine in Gaza is imminent, with immediate and long-term health consequences

The latest analysis from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) partnership released today warns that the situation in Gaza is catastrophic, with northern Gaza facing imminent famine and the rest of the Strip at risk as well.

The best software tester I’ve ever known once said to me, “Whenever I start at a new place, I find out which teams hate each other. Where their systems interface with each other is the first place I look for bugs — because they’re not talking to each other.”

Software projects stand and fall on the relationships between the humans who create them. (A corollary to Conway’s Law.)

@Climatehistories @ajkandy having delved into the academic literature on life cycle analysis, I am confident sunflowers will never match the ecological impact of creole gardens.

Mostly, though: how does reducing demand for cacao result in better livelihoods for cacao farmers?

@Climatehistories @ajkandy just finished the article while 3 different chocolate grinders are humming along.

The article is frustrating, and obscures the main reason farmers are not getting more money. Harvests are down 20% but prices are nearly 3X higher. How is this bad for farmers?

My cacao prices might go up $2-3/kg. Some are stable, but I was already paying above $10/kg. There's no way sunflower and pulses are going to replicate those flavors any time soon.

@ajkandy @Climatehistories some VC backed techno-optimists want to destroy demand for cacao farming with their ersatz/ soylent.

They even managed to fool some random taste testers, but not people who know good chocolate.

Cacao grown under shade can be carbon neutral, and even help repair deforested land- but we rely on subpar research done on the worst growers and packers to determine ecological impact of a sector.
