Good God. A restaurant uses AI to generate menu and this is what it reads.

Finds ja immer interessant, was öffentlich auf Malware-Analyseplattformen hochgeladen wird. Vielleicht schreib ich dem Brudi lieber mal, dass er sich bei dem Laden lieber nicht bewirbt.

Let’s go!! It’s a bit slow and the cursor is invisible (and unsurprisingly the controller buttons don’t do anything), but it’s working!

(btw this is an Anbernic RG35XX SP for those curious)

WeTransfer just changed their ToS to allow them to train AI on any files you transfer through them.

Don't use there service, especially for work that you don't have the right to relicense to them (e.g., commercial work that's exactly the most likely to create the huge files WeTransfer specializes in).

(ETA: this is already going boom so I'm muting it.)

@nixCraft do you know for sure that this is not deep-fried chickenpox pops? Some of these ghost restaurants are slinging some real sketchy food these days. 😆💀
@nixCraft I disagree! Restaurants using AI shows me exactly which ones not to visit!
@nixCraft as a recovering chef, fuck off, this is bullshit.

@nixCraft Why have a Chicken Pops party with your kids when you can just door dash it and avoid the germs?

The other germs...

Wait....

@nixCraft Welp, it's not completely wrong. I have 2 kids, and chicken pops/popcorn chicken is literally the only thing they eat, so yes, common in childhood. 🤪 🙃
@toddalio @nixCraft it appears your children have trained you well.
@perspectivet You know it! I've seen mules less stubborn than my eldest. 🤦‍♀️
@nixCraft i love chicken pox! much better than measles with mayonaise.
@nixCraft kind of reminds me about of this story: (see img)
Something interesting if not straight hilarious might come out if jointed.

@nixCraft

Ah, who doesn't like stuffing their face with some fresh itchy, blister-like bumps?

Of course, they have to be covered with tasty #gravy.

@root42

Now I am laughing really hard, you made my day!😂
Thank you!👍

@nixCraft

@nixCraft

Yeah, there's no resturant doing this. This is a human-made shitpost.

@nixCraft just take a quick look at the background video on this restaurant's website

https://www.muqam.resto-ouighour.fr/

the more you look...

Welcome !

@remi I noped right on out of there super fast. 😬
@nixCraft Listen, like so many, I HATE the use of AI in everything, but I don't think this is real. What restaurant would do this and then actually print it in their menu?
@cmccullough You'd be surprised, they exist long before AI existed. 😝 @nixCraft
@youronlyone @nixCraft But what restaurant would actually put this in their menu? Well, I mean, what restaurant that wants to stay open would actually put this in their menu?
@cmccullough @youronlyone @nixCraft I don't think this is the restaurant's thing. The app used, has millions of restaurants partners signed with it. These range from 5 star cuisines to literal roadside vendors who someone helped make an account. Most don't speak english, don't need to either. So this is most probably Zomato (the app) taking their single picture of each dish and running it through their AI tools to extrapolate a description so their app listing looks "professional".
@pheonix
There probably was a description in the original. It probably was in Telugu or Malayalam or one of those languages that are spoken in India by more native speakers than, say, Italian but are virtually unknown in the West. This is obviously a translation that somehow found "chicken pox" and just used it. The regular customers don't look at the English and the chef cooks and doesn't do IT and they just threw a couple rupees at some guy so they can be "online". I don't think this really is about AI other than that ai-based translations have gotten so good that most of the time you can just use them and they generally get the gist pretty well right...
@cmccullough @youronlyone @nixCraft

@cmccullough Either it was intentional and they have a theme, or no one checked.

The latter happens like this:

1. People who don't know how to properly use the technology copy-pasted without checking their work. Then someone higher in the chain was too lazy to check, and the manager/director trusts them a lot they signed it off without checking.

Or,

2. They're an SME (small to medium enterprise), "oh, wow, AI is cool", they didn't bother checking the result. 😂

Even before AI these funny errors were already happening. Unless it was intentional because they have a theme or event or private reservation. (Maybe it isn't in the West, especially in monolingual countries or predominantly English-speaking countries.)

The image in the OP can be fake/meme or was actually real. As crazy as it is.

Oh. One more thing, cultural considerations. In some cultures, they don't want to see that, but in some, they find it hilarious though sick (no pun intended), and won't be corrected until someone makes an issue about it. 😉

@nixCraft

@youronlyone
They're asking for Indian rupees, so this is in India somewhere. Some hole-in-the-wall, took a picture of some dishes; they didn't even have a table cloth for the picture. The price is about ~$2.50 so this isn't exactly the Bombay Yacht Club here. Someone ran the (handwritten scribble) dish name through a translator and that picked up on "chicken pox" and nobody in the chain speaks enough English to second-guess the translation. Welcome to any of the second-tier cities in India (or even just off-the-main-road in one of the first-tier cities)
...
@cmccullough @nixCraft
@nixCraft Hahaha! That's hysterical!

@nixCraft ...an employee that would write a description like this would be invited to write descriptions elsewhere almost immediately, but an AI...

Businesses are climbing all over themselves to get access to AI so they too, can have something that complies without question, won't vacate the position, never takes a holiday, and gives intant results.

What's not to love about that?

@nixCraft mmm yummy, two quid for some itchy virus bumps! Can I have a double helping please 🤣🤣🤣
@nixCraft Well, reminds me that I got so annoyed last week about by recently-bought keyboard having an issue and the store support chat being just an AI chatbot that I wrote some code to automatically chat with this bot, until it suddenly ended and it looks a human took its place. I guess I exhausted its quota. They said "your messages with our AI look estrange" to which I replied "which AI? you said before I'm was chatting with a real person called Julia! if I wanted to talk with an AI would go to an AI, not a store support chat". It looks like they didn't re-enable that AI later.
@qgustavor @nixCraft «Why do I see anchovy pieces in my strawberry smoothie?»
«Um, I blame the AI we asked for recipes.»

@nixCraft

I ❤️ restaurants using #AI for menus & marketing.

It's a glimpse into what shenanigans they might be up to in the kitchen. 🤢

@nixCraft AI bereichert uns den Speiseplan! 🤢
@nixCraft This is the only AI I'm here for.
@nixCraft Give em a break. They just hung out their shingle!
@nixCraft Huh. Back in my day they were free. Inflation really is out of control.
@nixCraft Reminds me of an auto-translated Turkish cookbook years ago. The recipes contained phrases like "wash yourself", "add a cook who stirs for five minutes" and "serve him hot".

@nixCraft

Probably not AI, just human dumbness.

Someone typed "chicken pops" into google, and google quite reasonably said "do you mean 'chicken pox'?" And gave that short description. The person who posted likely didn't speak English at all and simply copy-pasted the result. It's a common failure mode on menus.

@nixCraft

hahahahahahahhaahahahaha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

@nixCraft

Good God. A restaurant uses AI to generate menu and this is what it reads.

More likely google translate which is absolutely awful and quite often mixes up words plus adding insults to text.
Seen in English to German translations. I am fluent in both.

Travellers in Asia will be familiar with these things, even in big city's like Saigon, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur..

The problem occurs when neither staff nor cheap printing services can understand or read English.

@nixCraft served in a greasy cardboard box by a server named stu, who hasn't washed his hands all week!
@nixCraft AI has been highly beneficial for many reasons! It has provided help to those in need of inspiration, helping me to move past "writer's block" and complete writing a song, as well as offering support in times of struggle/confusion (especially when writing an email with a passive-aggressive tone). THIS is not one of those times 😂
@nixCraft Does that come with dipping sauce? Medicated dipping sauce?
@pattykimura calamine lotion? IIRC, it’s such a lovely pink shade and chalky texture😐
@nixCraft This is so funny 😂 .

@nixCraft

The terminator franchise talks about this devilishly sophisticated artificial intelligence..

The reality is it kills us in darkness

@nixCraft Taking hallucinations to a whole new level!

@nixCraft But, yes, we should totally let this run our military. No problems there.
