In addition to lending me mate equipment to get started on my new addiction, one sent me an instructional video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QMZvUnpr5Q

It is common here to see people walking to work with their mate and bombilla in hand, thermos at the ready.

CÓMO CEBAR UN BUEN MATE

YouTube

Yesterday, some wonderful friends here in #Argentina told us the secrets of drinking mate (yerba mate) properly:
1) Drink all the mate in the offered matero, then return it to the person with the thermos.
2) Don't move the metal straw around. No stirring!
3) Don't say "Gracias" until you don't want any more.

They all laughed when I said the essence of ethnographic research was making these kinds of mistakes until someone corrected you. I'll drink mate correctly from now on! #Ushuaia

The *look* on the face of an Argentinian when you say that people in the U.S. don't really use Whatsapp that much. "But... but... it's a U.S. company!!?" Yes, I know. I can't explain it either.
It is a challenge -- I've never sung in Spanish before (although I do speak it fluently) and sometimes I get tongue-tied. But it's great to learn a new set of skills!
While here in #Ushuaia, I've joined a local chorus. I sing #Barbershop in the US, and this chorus also performs popular (Latin American) music. I'm found that an important part of ethnographic research (for me) is finding a group of local people to engage with who are not directly connected to the research. These singers are that community for me!
This year I'm on sabbatical in Ushuaia, Argentina, doing ethnographic research on tourism to Antarctica. More importantly -- my child is learning to ice skate!

@mekkaokereke my county (Allegheny County, Pennsylvania) is using an AI prediction model to determine which parents should be able to get their children back from our child protection services, and which ones are just never going to be competent to raise their own offspring.
