I study Computer Science and I like Video Games, 3D printing and ofc Linux
I have even used it as a small child, because Dad is one of the og Windows haters, cheated on it in my teens to play video games and now I am back, almost fully faithful to it.

if a Game does not run on Linux, I don't play it.

@DerBusch @maximilianarnold @tuxedocomputers

@OpenComputeDesign if there are multiple people pointing this out, it is really worth looking into.

For many of us the diagnosis is a turning point in our lifes, from everything being weird and why is everything so hard and no matter what I try it always goes wrong to: OH THAT'S WHY I HAVE BEEN FEELING THIS WAY AND I AM NOT ALONE

no matter what you do keep in mind that you can do it :)

@rst @whitequark @tinker @AndresFreundTec react / npm / nodejs/ electron is a whole nother nightmare lol
@Apiary @tinker I mean, especially when someone tries so hard to hide it. I had a small look at it and it's heavyly obfuscated. Also this dude planned this over *years* that's alot of criminal energy. regular QA is there to find regular exploits, I'd say. The money is in the stuff that nobody found yet. Just like how Antivirus is basically useless for anything that has not yet been uncovered.

Imagine if every time you looked up anything in the Yellow Pages or encyclopedia, there was this big section at the top of the page called "Notes from Gary" where some guy named Gary who seems to know about 20% less than the average person just sorta gets to say whatever he wants about the subject, no matter how irrelevant it is.

This is what it's like to use Google now.

@luc @jwildeboer if you are really curious, this is one of the not so nice exchanges I have seen

also on some github I think I saw some racism against chinese people

edit I just realized I linked the wrong post lmao, it was this one:
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39865810

but tbh, especially on mastodon I see very little what could be categorized "flame wars" but I am only a few hours into researching this

Backdoor in upstream xz/liblzma leading to SSH server compromise | Hacker News

@jwildeboer @jzb The most important point I read (not sure which of the links was it that linked a mastodon post) was about how this whole situation was driven by developer burnout basically. I don't know how, but we need to find a way to better take care of our deer FOSS devs so they don't burn out and give their project to a malicious actor out of sheer desperation.

@hikhvar The banning of the github page is so anoying, I am not anyone who knows how to do security research or anything, I just wanted to have a look out of curiosity, but it's so hard to find anything!
So far, the only things one can look at is the files linked in the original blog post raising the issue:
https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2024/03/29/4

and a months old mirror of the repo: https://github.com/xz-mirror/xz

which should at least make it possible to look at old stuff the malicious actor committed?

oss-security - backdoor in upstream xz/liblzma leading to ssh server compromise

@js Hello together, a friend in a linux group I am in linked your conversation, have you found functioning mirrors yet? The one I found and works is this here: https://github.com/xz-mirror/xz

seems to be a few months old, but at least it's something for if someone wants too look through all of the old commits?

GitHub - xz-mirror/xz: See https://github.com/tukaani-project/xz for the official repository

@OpenComputeDesign For me it was knitting, that helped me actually achieve things lol
Also if you are not diagnosed yet, maybe you "just" have adhd :)

just wanna say: you are not alone in this struggle my unknown internet person
