The point is that we should not duplicate harmful applications. Not as Open Source and not as European.

A European, open source Palantir, or Instagram or TikTok is still harmful and corrosive to democracy and people's well-being.

We don't need European or open source Torment Nexi.

Like this is a luminary in the field, mocking his critics for making a prediction he finds risible when that prediction HAS ALREADY COME TRUE. He did the thing, and it went badly, in the way that everyone who is mad at him was saying all along that it would go badly. But he still thinks that he's right! This is not an unrepentant dumb guy being dumb, this is one of the smartest engineers in the field BECOMING dumb right before our eyes. That ought to scare you!

I've recently done something similar to what @parismarx outlines here, using Mastodon's filters to create a "US Politics" filter that automatically hides posts with certain words – such as, say, the current US president's name – from my timeline.

As a non-US citizen I've found doing this makes my timeline noticeably calmer and more pleasant to read.

Being able to set up custom filters like this is a really excellent Mastodon feature that probably doesn't get celebrated enough.

Bots just officially outnumbered humans on the internet for the first time ever. Cloudflare’s latest report shows AI and agentic traffic has grown so fast its now the majority of online traffic. We crossed a line and most people didn’t even notice 😳 https://radar.cloudflare.com/traffic#bot-vs-human

Dead internet theory is now becoming a reality

> @opensource

Europe removes 603 river barriers, setting a record for the fifth year running. Sweden led with 173 removals, while Iceland and North Macedonia joined the movement for the first time. Overall, Europe reconnected more than 3,740 km of rivers last year, but with 1.2 million barriers still fragmenting Europe’s waters, there’s still so much more to be done. Europe sets dam removal record... again!   - Wetlands International

OVER 600 BARRIERS DISMANTLED FOR FIRST TIME  The dam removal movement has once again broken records in Europe with at least 603 river barriers removed in 2025. This unprecedented effort reconnected over 3,740 km of rivers across the continent – strengthening climate resilience, enhancing water and food  security, boosting biodiversity, and accelerating the recovery of freshwater ecosystems.   Published today, […]

The enclosure of the FOSS commons may seem like a programmer-specific problem, but it really affects everyone. Privacy-preserving apps like Signal, for example, serve a purpose precisely because they're open and can be audited. Take away that ability to verify the developer's claims by parsing the code, and all guarantees are lost. The more that AI vendors succeed in locking in the FOSS commons, the less transparency we'll have into what our software actually does.
European Parliament ditches Google for French search firm over privacy concerns

The switch lands as EU officials prepare a broader push to wean off US tech.

@broadwaybabyto "B-b-b-but what if someone who doesn't deserve it gets it??"

Okay, wanna talk about things being taken by people who don't deserve it? Got a big list, you'll definitely know some of them and every one of them are wealthy.

"Oh but they earned it, these welfare cheats are scamming us all and living better than I do with my money!"

No, they didn't earn it, you just chose to give them the benefit of the doubt because you don't question that amount of money. They are the real cheats, the biggest recipients of government money, pay the least in and the real reason you live so poorly.

Maybe the rich people with their decadence on your dime are simply people you envy while the poor are people you'd loathe to be given how you treat them.
