A few gifts I made over the holidays. Bandsaw mantle clocks.

Decent used bandsaws don’t often show up around here and when they do its for a premium price or goes quick.

With the holiday sales coming up I’ve got the Jet JWBS14-SFX, Rikon 10-324TG, and Rikon 10-326 on the short list.

My main question is will the 1/4 hp difference be noticeable as a hobbist resawing from 1.5 to 1.75? I mostly work with cherry, walnut, hard and soft maple, and red oak. 8-10” or larger boards sometimes, most are under 6” wide.

@Av8rdan I generally followed the plans from the Fine Woodworking #299 article. There weren't any significantly different things done for my version that caused me to alter the plans in meaningful ways.

I used 8/4 cherry rather than laminating 3/4 cherry boards for the jaws. That made the thickness and width slightly different. The jaw was lined with cork rubber rather than leather. I also used different hardware for the screws than described in the article.

The bolt holes were drilled with a 3/16 for the 'wings' and 1" forstner for the main body. A little work with a spindle sander attachment on the drill press to shave off the inside of the 1" hole made for a tight friction fit. On a test piece I found a 3/4 hole had some movement around the screw so I used a 17mm (11/16th) forstner bit. Some paste wax in the holes and on the threads make the turning easier.

This is a moxon vise I completed last week. The basic design and dimensions were taken from an article on the Fine Woodworking site. This jaws were made of some 8/4 cherry I had available from my last project. The top ledge and bottom of the back jaw are made from 3/4 cherry. Jorgensen press screws were used for the tightening mechanism. I removed and discarded the square press piece on the ends and embedded the 'bolt' in the back piece. The front jaw is lined with cork rubber.

I finished this library table based on Norm Abram’s New Yankee Workshop S03E09 project. The plans I used were from Norm’s book Mostly Shaker.

Like Norm, I used cherry for the primary wood and poplar with 1/4 inch plywood for the drawer runners, interior supports, and drawer boxes. Four screws were use to secure the top to the frame and is the only hardware in the build. The finish is blonde shellac and a coat of wax applied with 0000 steel wool.

@miunau the two companies share the same corporate parent.

@MIfoodie

Unless your stores are really strange there should be non-pressure treated material there. Did you ask any of the workers where to find just the regular pine boards?

If you want to put a finish on it I would suggest a waterbased outdoor polyurethane. Once cured it should be good to go. I might even just do a shellac finish. But whatever finish you use on it will need to be redone in a few years or sooner depending on the location.

Now that they’ve been given out I can share pictures of some of the cheese cutters and cutting boards that were made for Christmas gifts this year. Hard Maple, Hickory, and Walnut. A couple included Purple Heart.

I provided ~4oz tins of ‘board butter’. A 4:1 mixture of mineral oil and beeswax. Heated and mixed in a double boiler.

I forget to provide a card for the care of the boards; how often to apply the mixture, drying after washing, don’t use the dishwasher, etc.
