The guy made a business of networking so there are a lot of names in there with varying levels of contact. It's impossible to know exactly what any one person knew at the time, but we can refer to Wikipedia to get an idea of what was public in say 2008:

Did you buy Minecraft through Mojang before Microsoft forced account migrations?
Some folks are working on a class action lawsuit against Microsoft because of people being locked out of playing the game they paid for, just because they didn't migrate their account in time. And because of constant updates to the terms and services without proper notice given to customers.
