I do indie game development in my free time.

Golang and Python by day, bandsaw and handplane by night. Opinions are my own and I'm not a point of contact for my org.

Every unreal engine animation tutorial that starts with Mixamo is missing the fucking point
why does godot even have a built in UI tooltip system if the recommendation in 99% of cases is to roll your own because they they go off screen / don't wrap / etc.

I may or may not have cofounded an #indie game studio with some old and new friends.

Our first project together isn't finished, but it's close enough to let you know it exists!

1 Bit Hero on Steam

Get ready to explore lands far away and fight everything in your path. In a relentless twist of RPG/Survival Horde you’ll face many challenges, but all in due time, little hero.

@gamingonlinux now I guess godot should pinch a little physics from half life 2, maybe a level editor too.

I've been doing extensive testing in Godot with lighting in relation to light leaks because they drive me nuts.

I simply cannot seem to produce geometry that does not leak light really badly. Godot devs will quickly tell people to make thicker geometry or do this and that and it just doesn't work. It feels impossible to build light-sealed rooms no matter your topology.

This feels so wild coming back from Unreal where it Just Works ™️

See if you can find something interesting to you that comes already skeletonized and even animated so you can get right into tinkering in the engine and getting some experience there so you know what you would want out of a 3D model you made yourself.

Use free assets to work out your core idea into something playable that you can build off of and start planning art direction etc.

Don't start with assets, start with gameplay :)

@scarlett I see what you're going for. Your key points of interest will be axis-locking movement, figuring out your perspective and scale, and then starting to tinker with some assets.

The 3D asset workflow is garbage everywhere unless you're a pro. Blender->Godot is pretty good as things go, but it's still a PITA and buggy as hell. Texturing/materials is a nightmare as well.

If you really want to dig in and not have to spend the next 2 weeks learning how to model and rig, get some itch assets

@scarlett are you going for pixel art in 3D space or 2D canvas with faux depth?
