Thunderstorms Make Trees Glow

Scientists have long hypothesized that the high electrical charge of thunderstorms could produce an opposite charge in the ground that would discharge from the forest canopy. But this phenomenon, known as a corona, had never been observed on actual trees. A new study, however, has observed this ghostly ultraviolet (UV) glow from the tips of sweetgum leaves and loblolly pine needles during thunderstorms.

Catching these coronae in action required a new kind of UV detector that was ultra-sensitive to the particular band of UV-light emitted by coronas, hot fires, or mercury lamps. Since the latter two weren’t present during the team’s field observations, they were able to conclude that the light they detected came from coronae.

The group observed that corona discharges were transient, jumping from leaf to leaf and branch to branch across the forest canopy. For any creature capable of detecting that glow by eye, it must be incredible to watch the treetops lit by their own ever-shifting auroras during every thunderstorm. (Image credit: W. @ScienceDesk @Gizmodo The writeup is a bit misleading: the study quite solidly establishes that CAM *in place of* mainstream treatment, either in whole or in part, reduces survival, but they never do the analysis for CAM *in addition to* mainstream treatment. It also lumps all CAM treatments together: the person who uses healing crystals for nausea reduction after chemotherapy is in the same "CAM+mainstream" bucket as the one who uses kudzu tea instead of hormone therapy.
@tezoatlipoca @stux @web3isgreat A lot of the money being lost doesn't really exist in the first place. When you've got large holdings in a high-price, thinly-traded asset, yes, when you multiply the numbers, you look rich. But if you attempt to actually cash out, you'll get far less money.
@mattotcha It's fusion power. I expect construction will be about twenty years away from completion for at least the next century.
@TheBreadmonkey Proof he's an outstanding skier: he managed to stay on his skis afterwards.
@nikthechampiongr @raymierussell @etchedpixels @mxk @Frank_Juston That's a different situation. In the Air Canada situation, the user made a good-faith query of the LLM, and got a wrong answer, much like they'd have to honor a human-produced error on the website. In this case, the user spent considerable effort to make an LLM produce a wrong answer, knowing in advance that it was wrong.
@crazyeddie @mxk @Frank_Juston In this case, it looks like the storefront did have those access controls. The user talked the AI into hallucinating an 80% discount with an equally hallucinated discount code, and when the order form rejected it, tried to get the discount anyway.
@RRSSirDavidAttenborough That ship provides some really spectacular views at times.
@aerialbot Looks like someone really wanted that road to follow a straight line.
