@jjimenezshaw has been kicking coordinate system ass lately. Besides the wonderful crs-explorer.proj.org, he recently revamped https://spatialreference.org to be a statically generated, blazing fast, GitHub pages hosted, website based on PROJ/PyPROJ. If you want to see how it works or host your own, jump on the repo at https://github.com/OSGeo/spatialreference.org/

Thank you so much Javier!

kinda weird how people will just attach chatgpt to customer service things and let it fuck around practically unmonitored while they watch their human employees like a hawk and fire them at the first sign of an oopsie

I forgot I did this: an animation of the Helvetica alphabet being consumed by differential growth 🙃

@FAIR Hannah Arendt (New Yorker, 12/9/23) called Israel’s Herut party—a forerunner of Likud—”a political party closely akin in its organization, methods, political philosophy, and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties.” Such opinions would likely disqualify her for the Hannah Arendt Prize.

Congratulations to Daniela (Dani) Waltersdorfer Jimenez, Guillaume Rischard (@grischard) and Roland Olbricht on being elected to the OSM Foundation Board at the AGM.

Given all the Threads discussion there is one short thing I need to say.

The simplest tech-world thing I learned from the whole Meta in Myanmar project is that Meta is WAY more callous, deceptive, and incompetent with the life-or-death things that matter the most than even most of their critics understand.

The Washington Post union is striking on Thursday, 7 December, and they’re asking people to not cross the picket line:

“For 24 hours, please do not engage with any Washington Post content. That includes our print and online news stories, podcasts, videos, games and recipes. Instead, share information about our strike and send a letter to Post leaders in support of the people who make this institution run.”

It's time for an #abolition thread. We’ve had a couple of relevant stories in the news recently that are helping to create community safety so I wanted to highlight them in case you missed it. Remember, some factors which lead to unsafe communities are lack of economic stability, lack of access to food, lack of affordable housing, and no access to adequate and affordable medical care. 1/8
@specked Thanks for your comment. The #abolition threads are not about the police, but rather how we as members of a community must think creatively about our own individual communities and what we can each contribute to building safe and healthy communities that do not turn to the police for safety.

I’m reminded of the naivety of early social media engineers assuming that if you connect the whole world then we’d live happily ever after. Instead we now know it’s just a thankless job fighting hate speech, election meddling, COVID misinformation, cyber bullying, etc.

The AI people are actively ignoring thinking through the harms LLMs can and are causing today to focus on fantasies inspired by books and movies they saw as kids.
