#FieldworkFriday last week I visited the exciting Early Neolithic site Eilsleben in πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ where the university of Halle is excavating. In the '80s they dug here and found the remains of farmhouses, animals, humans, and even a mask made from a human skull 😬

The Linear Pottery culture, dated to ca 5500-4800 BCE, which this site belongs to, seem pretty macabre to us today. But oh so cool too! I'm very excited to be collaborating on this project in the years to come 🀩

It was a lot of fun presenting our elk project at the Bronze Age animal session. Such a great session too, organised by Joanna Brick & co. I left feeling very inspired! We will be back with more results soon I hope! #EAA2024
#EAA2024 off to a great start yesterday with a visit to the amazing Roman forum followed by the welcome reception there. Though I think the organisers underestimated how many archaeologists would want to have a drink in this spectacular location πŸ˜‚
I took a summer social media break which was healthy but I also missed this community. I'm back in full force with lots of archaeology stuff to come. But first, this week is the #EAA2024 conference in Rome! That means 4 days of archaeology, networking and catching up with old and new friends. Very excited!

Today I was at the Museum Kam in Nijmegen to take samples from elk and red deer bones for stable isotope analysis. I only need about 300-500 mg for a good sample. The red deer bone on the photo was a hefty one so I ended up with more than enough!

While I was there I also got to admire the hundreds of Roman period pots they house at the museum 🀩

The theses are in, but I'm a bit distracted this week. One of my bunnies is sick. Please send hugs. Leo is an old dude so he can use some extra ones 🐰

The results are in! A clear majority are for faffing about, which I can proudly say I've been doing quite well so far this week. The 10% who voted for articles would be happy too though because I've managed to work on those too.

I also promise some more posts this week!

No if we're talking about wild animals. But yes if we're talking about cattle! From this point on cattle play a very specific role in Dutch (pre)history - they are managed carefully, exchanged, and become more and more important. So..hunter-gatherer-farmer-cattle herders?😁 12/
While these people kept cattle, pigs, and sheep - and managed them intensively - and they had crops, their subsistence consisted for a large part of hunted and gathered wild resources, like beavers🦫, wild boar πŸ—, and hazelnuts. They made full use of the wetland landscape 10/
The cattle were domestic and smaller than the cattle from Early Neolithic Linearbandkeramik sites. We also found small domestic pigs that had probably lived on the settlements, foraging on human refuse πŸ– 9/
